YouTuber Samantha March Spills About Her Divorce + How She is Balancing Her Personal Life with YouTube: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 288
“I love that I get to connect with my audience about makeup… but every once in a while I throw something in there where we can talk about a different subject, and it just continues to astound me how many people write in saying thank you, and saying that they no longer feel so alone.”

Samantha March is a beauty content creator, blogger, and published author of 8 novels. She focuses her platforms on living an inspired life and enjoys sharing her own journey on how she created a life she loves. She was recognized in the industry as Skincare Influencer of 2019 at the American Influencer Awards and has two collaborations with Ofra Cosmetics.
This week’s episode is all about being vulnerable as a YouTuber. Samantha started out as a blogger way back in 2009, and her YouTube channel initially was about books, but she rebranded to beauty. For a year, she stuck with the trends but she quickly realized that she wasn’t having fun, and that it was really starting to feel like WORK. So she started mixing Get Ready With Me style videos where she talked about her personal life and struggles, and it was then that she finally felt like it was HER channel, where people could really see HER as a person, not just someone talking about makeup. Her viewers responded to it. The DMs and messages started flowing, and she started making a deeper connection with her viewers. In one of her first vulnerable videos, she opened up about being a survivor of abuse, which was initially scary for her, but once it was published, the messages from others confiding in her that they had gone through something similar made the fears go away. Knowing that she is helping both others and herself not feel so alone is truly priceless.
“One of the most negative things about putting yourself out there is that it just gives more people more things to dislike about you. The more personality you show, and the more personal you get, it makes people mad, for whatever reason it may be.”
For the most part, the response has been overwhelmingly positive, but it is the internet, so Samantha has had to deal with some negativity. The more personal you get, or the more personality you show gives people more things to dislike about you and spin it to fit their own narrative. One of the hardest lessons she’s had to learn is balance and boundaries. She now stops, thinks, and sits on her topics and ideas before she decides to put it out there. Samantha recently publicly announced that she was going through a divorce, and announcing this was hard. As she’s been going through this difficult and painful process, she’s had many days where she didn’t want to do anything, especially come online and smile and chat about makeup while she felt like her world was falling apart. But it was her social media career and her passion for content creation that did keep her going and motivated.
“It’s part of my routine and it’s part of what keeps me going and keeps me motivated.”
3 Key Interview Takeaways
- Vulnerability helps you connect with your subscribers. No matter what you are going though, someone else knows how you feel. You might feel alone, but you’re not. Being open and honest about your struggles might reach someone who is going through the same thing. It will help them feel less alone, and in turn, seeing someone who connects with what you’re feeling will help YOU feel less alone.
- Sleep on it. One of the biggest things that Samantha has learned in her YouTube journey is to think about something before making a video about it. Once it’s out there, you can’t take it back, and it’s come back to bite her. Now she really ruminates on her ideas and is more careful about what she puts out there.
- There will always be haters. The more vulnerable you are and the more you share about yourself, the more people will find to dislike. Someone will always find something to dislike about you, however stupid it might be (like the color of your shirt). Take it in stride and for the sake of your mental health, hide those comments and don’t feed the trolls.

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS
Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.
Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!
Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!
THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT
After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!
- 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
- Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
- Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
- Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
- Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
- Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
- Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
