Tiffany Ferg Reveals EVERY DETAIL of her YouTube Video Creation Process Step-by-Step: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 286

“Make as much content as you can with what you have, but have fun with it and don’t be scared to try new things.”

Be sure to check out my FREE eBook: How to Create Impactful Content During COVID-19 Pandemic! This 32 page guide will walk you through how to create content during a global crisis PLUS it includes over 75 YouTube video ideas that you can use TODAY to grow your channel!

Tiffany Ferguson (she/her) is a 25 year old content creator based in NYC. She’s well-known for her Internet Analysis series, in which she discusses internet culture and media. She has been on YouTube since she was only 11 years old and has over 684K subscribers on her channel.

In my interview with Tiffany, we talked about how she comes up with ideas, and her creative process for her amazing videos. She starts with ideas on her phone, often questions she has, or things she finds on Youtube, on social media, or in articles. When it’s time to figure out what video she’ll do next, she goes back to that list and decides what she’ll use, especially if one turns out to be really topical, but sometimes those ideas stay on her phone brain dump for a year! She’ll then outline it with random thoughts or questions, build a script and make it flow, and start researching the topic and downloading any clips or visuals she’ll use. She’ll practice reading the script and timing it to see how long it is, and to make sure it flows properly. It can take her anywhere from 6-10 hours of writing and research PER VIDEO, depending on what the topic is and how much content she has to consume in her research process. She is deliberate in structuring her videos to try to keep her viewers engaged throughout the whole video. She especially tries to spend the majority of her time and energy on the first part of the video to hook people in and keep them engaged. The editing process takes the longest, and when all is said and done, it takes her 7-10 days to complete ONE video.

“It’s been really good for me that my growth was so gradual and I had time to establish myself as a person.”

What I find the most interesting about Tiffany is that she does not have a set upload schedule like most YouTubers do. She tries to do 3 internet analysis videos every month, and when selecting a video idea, she does search for whether or not a video like it exists. If she finds one, she tries not to watch it so as not to influence her own opinions. Tiffany tends to avoid creating content that’s trending because it’s pretty saturated, but she will try to choose a topic right before it becomes popular so she can be one of the first. In this episode we also discuss the difference between “old” YouTube and “new” YouTube, and as someone who has been on YouTube for 14+ years, Tiffany gave some amazing insight into how YouTube has truly evolved. Her dream since she was 13 was to be a full-time YouTuber, and she has accomplished exactly that!

“The atmosphere does change when you become popular.”

3 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. The more planning, the better. Sometimes, a 30 minute video could be 90 minutes worth of footage to sort through and edit. The more planning you can do beforehand, the better. Tiffany quickly realized that doing all the research and writing the script beforehand before getting to edit it was the best strategy for her.
  2. Self-doubt. The YouTube climate does change when a channel takes off and becomes popular. The pressure is higher. Often, YouTubers pour so much of themselves into their content that self-doubt can be a huge struggle. It’s important to separate yourself as a person from your channel so that your self-esteem does not become dependent on whether or not people watch your videos.
  3. Don’t be afraid to try new things. There is a space on YouTube for everybody, and you should create as much content as you want about whatever you want. Don’t be afraid to try new things, because you never know, that new thing could be what makes your channel blow up!

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS

Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.

Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!

Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!

THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT

After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!

  • 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
  • Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
  • Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
  • Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
  • Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
  • Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
  • Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
