Social Media Manager Desiree Martinez Reveals the Truth About Running a Social Media Agency: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 252

“There’s something for everyone on YouTube, and if you think that there isn’t, you need to go be that person.”

Desiree Martinez is a long-time and award-winning social media creative content creator. She has worked with hundreds of businesses and brands to help them grow their business with better content marketing. As a YouTuber, Podcaster, speaker, and business owner, Desiree knows what it takes to help your business grow, build a community, and get leads through a very noisy news feed. She is the author of Innovation From Desperation: The Unfiltered Failures & Successes of an OG Social Media Marketer.

I first met Desiree at VidSummit a year ago, and I was SO inspired by her story and really wanted to have her on the show. Desiree has been in the social media marketing industry for 10 years, despite going to college with the intent to be an animator. When the economy tanked, her hopes of becoming an animator crashed around her, she had to move back in with her parents, and felt totally defeated and discouraged. But with the rise of facebook, Desiree realized that she was at rock bottom with nothing left to lose, so she gave social media management a shot. Now, she is the breadwinner for her family, she has established herself as one of the leading social media experts in her field, she has a youtube channel, she’s written a book, she has speaking engagements all over the country… all because she decided “why not?” As a military spouse, Desiree is passionate about helping other military spouses find stable employment. Her agency helps military spouses learn to become social media managers so they can support their families. Talk about women helping women!

“It’s now a necessity. You can’t have a brand or business without some kind of social presence.”

So what are Desiree’s thoughts about the ever-changing landscape of social media? Well, it’s a lot different today in 2020 than it was 10 years ago when Desiree first took the plunge into social media management. Now, social media is an essential component to business, and while personal brands don’t do great on facebook (they do better on Instagram or Youtube), brick and mortar local businesses do great on facebook, so much so that if they don’t have one, people assume they aren’t open! Desiree believes every business should have a facebook page and a website (you can’t do location-based ads without a business facebook account!), and it’s crucial for businesses to remain topical, relevant, and active on social media, showing glimpses behind-the-scenes of their business to build personal relationships with their communities. As for her YouTube channel, Desiree’s channel is a resource channel where she posts a lot of “how to: style videos: how to create a facebook page, how to link your facebook page to your instagram, how to set up a LinkedIn page, etc. Her channel is all about helping solve people’s problems when it comes to their business’s presence on social media.

“In my last 10 years of social media marketing, there’s never been a more clear or common-sense option to become a YouTuber.”

3 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. Build an email list. Since Desiree’s channel is a “how-to” channel, she puts a lot of work into building her list. Every single one of her videos have an opt-in link to a freebie that relates to her video topic so she can help build and grow her email list.
  2. Don’t rely on AdSense. We’ve heard this one A LOT on the show: you need to have multiple streams of income. Desiree’s channel has about 15k subscribers, and from one video with 82K views, she made only $750. That just won’t cut it for her family! You cannot rely on AdSense, so whether that’s through a personal business or through brand partnerships or through something like Patreon, you need to have multiple revenue streams.
  3. It’s now or never for YouTube. There’s something for everyone on YouTube, and in a post-covid world, now is the time to get on YouTube. As Desiree said, you can future-proof your income with YouTube. In a world where women and mothers are out disproportionally out of work, the future is online, and YouTube and Social Media are where you can be.

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS

Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.

Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!

Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!

THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT

After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!

  • 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
  • Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
  • Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
  • Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
  • Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
  • Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
  • Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
