Another YouTube Power Hour first! I’m delighted to welcome my first set of TWINS on the show! Kelsey and Kendra Murrell are the creators behind their social media empire The Glam Twinz. These gorgeous identical twin sisters discuss all things beauty-related on their channel. With perseverance and hard work, the twins have mastered social media and have impacted and encouraged millions to be the best versions of themselves! They currently have 686k youtube subscribers and 73 million video views.
Kelsey and Kendra have always been obsessed with hair, even from the time they were young children. They eventually started looking on YouTube for ways to be able to do their own hair rather than spend the money to get it done in a salon. That’s when they decided to start their own channel. It began as a hobby, but once they realized they could get paid with it, they started to really take it seriously. As their channel became both more demanding and more lucrative, they decided to quit their jobs and moved to Atlanta.
“If you stay true to yourself, you won’t have to change. It’s easier to do you than to try to keep up with everyone else.”
When it comes to YouTube (especially in the beauty world), it’s often difficult to find a balance when creating content. The twins try to find a balance between creating things they want to make, taking a chance on what they think their audience will like based on the trends in their stats, and what is trending in the industry. In a saturated niche, staying relevant can present a challenge. Do you capitalize on the trends even if it means being inauthentic? For Kelsey and Kendra, the answer is no, and the logic behind it is simple: trends don’t last forever. They go out of style eventually. It’s so much easier to just do YOU rather than to keep up with everyone else. If a trend correlates with their channel, and can easily be integrated, they’ll do it, but they always go back to their bottom line of being authentic. Another challenge YouTube creators face is the criticism, critiques, and comparisons to other creators… but for the twins, those double when they are not only compared to other creators, but to each other. They’ve learned to just push past it and stay true to themselves as individuals. They may be identical twins, but they are very different. When you try to please everybody, nobody ends up happy, especially you.
“When they see twins, they forget we are two different people.”
3 Key Interview Takeaways
- Be true to yourself. Why try to keep up with everyone else? Just be you. The viewers want to see who you really are and what you can bring to the table.
- Know the energy you are putting out. The viewers can sense when you are being inauthentic. They will know when you’re not feelin’ what you’re making. They will know when you’re just looking for validation. The energy that you put into your videos is crucial to getting people to like you and want to come back.
- You don’t need an expensive studio. There are many people out there who want to start a YouTube channel but believe they need fancy equipment in order to create quality content and that’s simply not true. In the words of Kelsey and Kendra, all you need is daylight and a camera (even if that means it’s an iPhone!). Don’t hold yourself back by comparing to what others have that you don’t. You don’t need any of that to be successful.

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS
Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.
Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!
Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!
THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT
After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!
- 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
- Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
- Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
- Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
- Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
- Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
- Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
