Too Old for YouTube? No Way, Says 57-year-old Angie of Hot and Flashy

Too Old for YouTube? No Way, Says 57-year-old Angie of Hot and Flashy: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 226

“It doesn’t matter who you are, what you are, or how old you are, there’s content for you.”

Be sure to check out my FREE eBook: How to Create Impactful Content During COVID-19 Pandemic! This 32 page guide will walk you through how to create content during a global crisis PLUS it includes over 75 YouTube video ideas that you can use TODAY to grow your channel!

Angie from Hot and Flashy started her channel in 2012 at the age of 50 as a means to talk about the very taboo topic of aging skincare, after realizing that there weren’t many women her age who were talking about it. Her experience as a graphic designer gave her a technological leg up, but because she didn’t have experience being in front of a camera, she had to overcome shyness, and she had to learn what camera to use, and how to get the right lighting. Despite not having any professional expertise, she loved the learning process and being able to teach others and interacting with her audience. What started out as a hobby continued because of how much she enjoyed it, how perfectly it fit into her lifestyle, and how much encouragement she got from her audience. Angie’s channel completely took off after Women’s Day Magazine did a full-page spread on it, and the rest is history.

Most people think that YouTube is for young people, but there IS an audience of older people on YouTube. It might not be as big, but it’s there. There are many more people in their 40s and 50s who are now more confident with using social media than they were 7-10 years ago. Many viewers have aged along with their favorite YouTubers, so anyone who started watching YouTube 10 years ago in their twenties is now creeping up toward their forties.

“If you want to start a channel, just start it. You don’t need great lighting, you don’t even need to be comfortable in front of the camera. If you have a message that’s resonating with people, it doesn’t really matter what your lighting and camera setup is.”

Angie’s channel is more than just skincare: it’s about the entire anti-aging process, including skincare, makeup, hair, exercise, and lifestyle. Her content runs the entire gamut, which has been both good and bad for her channel. The people that only want to watch her for her makeup-related content don’t necessarily want to watch her lifestyle videos. But instead of niching down, Angie prefers to diversify her channel. It makes it easy for her to continue creating content that way, and she enjoys it. What people love about Angie is her honesty and relatability. It’s not about perfection, it’s about what makes you relatable… even if that means having a hot flash in the middle of your videos.

“The outpouring of support is just so great, and that’s what really keeps you going and makes you understand the relationship you have with your subscribers.”

3 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. Sometimes it takes a long time to go viral. For years, Angie was chasing that one “viral” hit, and thought nearly every video was going to be THE video. She was admittedly discouraged when that didn’t happen. It took 3-4 years for Angie to get a viral hit, but her relationship with her audience and her love for what she was doing was what kept her going. It’s not about the views, it’s about whether or not you love what you’re doing and what kinds of bonds you can build with your audience.
  2. Older YouTube Creators face different challenges. The older age bracket has a very specific thing they are looking for, and often, even things like makeup tutorials are completely different for older people than they are for younger people. Younger people don’t have to worry about how makeup looks on their skin, creasing, etc. but this is what older people want to learn about.
  3. Gauge your audience. Angie is always gauging her audience and listening to what their interests are, and what they want to see or learn about. Her viewers are so loyal, that they will often wait for her take on a product before they choose to buy it or try it themselves, regardless of which other YouTubers have already featured it on their channel. Because Angie’s content is so diversified, she also rotates it, so that there aren’t too many makeup or skincare videos in a row.

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS

Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.

Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!

Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!

THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT

After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!

  • 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
  • Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
  • Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
  • Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
  • Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
  • Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
  • Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
