Leonie Barlow a.k.a the Style Insider is a 56-year-old journalist who spent over 20-years editing some of New Zealand’s top selling women’s lifestyle titles. She spent 7 years as an editor of New Zealand’s largest fashion magazine, Fashion Quarterly. She left her magazine career 13 years ago to spend more time with her sons. Leonie went ALL IN on her YouTube channel this year, and never looked back.

Leonie started her career as a content creator as a blogger, and she was actually one of the first bloggers in New Zealand. A lot of her blogs featured video content, and she was utilizing YouTube to host her videos. A few years later, she realized that Youtube was more than just a place to host videos, and it was actually its own platform. Leonie loves a challenge, but what started as a pipe dream grew into something beyond her wildest dreams.

“Manage your expectations and don’t compare yourself to others.”

In this episode we talk about…

  • How Leonie got started on YouTube
  • Dabbling in different niches
  • What do you do as a fashion creator located in the southern hemisphere when seasons are different?
  • Figuring out what videos to create: do you create what your audience likes or create what YOU want to create?
  • The kinds of videos that do well on Leonie’s channel
  • Making fashion inclusive and accessible
  • Leonie’s biggest YouTube struggles
  • Comparison is the thief of joy
  • Leonie’s YouTube superpower
  • Leonie’s #1 piece of advice for YouTube creators

“Anyone can do it. It does require time and commitment unlike any other social media platform, but if you’re committed, and you’re willing to put in the work, it will happen.”
