Whether you’re a woman over 50, or just hungry to make it big on YouTube, you’re going to want to check this out! Lifestyle YouTuber Schellea Fowler, aka Fabulous50s, is sharing her secrets and going deep in lessons on how she grew to almost 600k subscribers in less than 3 years in a niche you really wouldn’t expect. Gain the upper hand by learning all you can in this week’s episode!

Schellea got inspired to start on YouTube after she and her husband sold their business and retired when she was 49. They went on to travel, live it up and do all the things they dreamed of doing. But the problem was that after enjoying herself non-stop, without a new goal to chase, it became boring for her. So she started her channel, in July 2017, to have an impact at scale, taking what she does face-to-face with her clients and doing it on YouTube. She focused her niche on women over 50 and got to work. Initially, she was kind of shy and afraid to put herself out there. She wanted people to watch her videos, but she was afraid of being seen. But she pushed through and after 6 months of doing it, she felt more comfortable with boldly sharing her message, and that reflected in her channel’s growth. One video blew up to over 2 million views and her channel blew up as well. Now she has almost 600 subscribers in a little more than 2 years!

“The turning point for my YouTube success was definitely when I finally felt comfortable with myself.”

In this episode, Schellea breaks down the philosophy behind her channel and gives us her insights and lessons into not just growing SUPER fast on YouTube, but building a channel you’ll be proud of that will stand the test of time. Enjoy!

“Feeling solid within yourself helps you appreciate what you have instead of always wanting more.”

4 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. Consistency is the key, but don’t burn yourself out. Once a week, slow and steady. That’s what Schellea focuses on. You’d think that would mean her channel would grow slowly, but it hasn’t. The first year, she hit 100k subscribers, and in the second year, she was over 500k. That’s not normal growth. When you watch her videos, you see the time and effort she put into quality. High-quality videos, high quality of information being shared. Editing is on point as well. Don’t underestimate the power of a weekly video. And don’t try to do more if that means you’ll compromise your quality or your sanity.
  2. Give people what they want. Read comments, poll your audience, research their problems and create content for them from that perspective. That is all Schellea focuses on and her content shines. She doesn’t ride trending topics, because her target audience won’t be found on trends. In the comments section of your videos and other creators in your niche, your viewers are telling you exactly what they want. Pay attention and give it to them.
  3. Would you click your video titles? This is a question Schellea suggests you ask yourself when you’re finalizing your video titles. If you can put yourself in the shoes of your viewer, you’ll write better titles and make better videos in general. You want to create interest and intrigue in your viewer, without tipping your hand too much. Meaning, make your titles create curiosity without giving away the gist of the video.
  4. Use your analytics and tweak your videos. If your click-through rate is low, try changing your thumbnails or titles. Schellea found that if her videos don’t perform well in the first 24 hours, changing her thumbnail usually caused a boost. You want to keep an eye on your click-through rate and watch duration and make tweaks to keep those numbers high. Like getting directly into the content, or changing the scenes or turning up your energy more. Use the analytics to give you the right direction.

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS

Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.

Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!

Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!

THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT

After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!

  • 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
  • Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
  • Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
  • Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
  • Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
  • Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
  • Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
