Meet Kelli and Christina of Mommies, Makeup, and Moscato! Kelli is a 44-year-old mom of two teen daughters, happily married for 20 years to her college sweetheart. She grew up in South Florida and was an elementary school teacher before having children. Kelli has always had a passion for all things fashion-related and was obsessed with reading all of the fashion magazines since high school. She also studied broadcast communications for a short time in college and loves being in front of the camera. Christina is a 45-year-old mom of a 16 year old daughter and an 11 year old son. She met her husband when she was 14 years old and they have been married for 18 years. Christina grew up as an Army brat and has previously worked as an accountant for Arthur Andersen and Grant Thornton. She grew up loving sports like softball, volleyball, and soccer, and living and experiencing so many cultures allowed her to appreciate the different fashion styles growing up.

Kelli and Christina were best friends and realized as their children got older that they wanted a job that was flexible, and discovered that they both had interest in starting a YouTube channel. When they started their channel, everything had a huge learning curve, from editing to lighting to content to tech, but they learned it together. The great thing about having a channel with someone else is that you have someone to learn and grow with, and lucky for Kelli and Christina, their strengths and weaknesses complement each other and they have a really cohesive partnership. Despite learning as they went, they did pretty well and got to 16K subscribers, but it was there that their growth slowed, and they were feeling stagnant and stuck. They knew they were doing some things well, but that there was also room for improvement and they were looking for someone to talk to, coach them through it, and bounce ideas off of. That’s when they found and enrolled in the Zero to Influence YouTube Bootcamp. Within just a couple months of joining the bootcamp, Kelli and Christina went from a stagnant channel at 16K to a thriving and growing channel at over 50k. They now have 63K subscribers!

“If you don’t have vision, then you’re kind of driving all over the road.”

Kelli and Christina divided and conquered all the resources in the bootcamp, and even though they were separately diving into the resources, they were essentially learning the same things. They had faith in the bootcamp from the beginning. They trusted the process and put in the work, and it paid off as their channel started to grow quickly and they had quite a few a-ha moments. They realized they needed a vision for their content; they needed to find their niche and figure out how to target and focus on their ideal audience to ensure that they were reaching this underserved demographic. They also were overwhelmed by creating content on multiple platforms until they realized that they only really needed to focus on YouTube. Through the teachings of the bootcamp, Kelli and Christina figured out a quality over quantity upload schedule that kept them consistent without the overwhelm was a game-changer. They learned about thumbnails, and how to create ones that actually get clicks, not what they “think” a thumbnail should look like or what aligns with their personal tastes. They took full advantage of the twice monthly accelerator calls with feedback and Q&A from Erika, as well as the collaborative atmosphere of the members-only community. The mindset teachings of the bootcamp encouraged them to overcome their imposter syndrome and truly release themselves from the burden of feeling like they don’t have anything to offer. Kelli and Christina are truly finding a way to have it all: to balance family life as a stay-at-home-mom while still contributing to the family financially with a “job” and mission they are passionate about!

“Don’t allow negativity to prevent you from focusing on your goal.”

3 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. Just try it. What do you have to lose? Be true to yourself and don’t worry about what others think. Before they started their channel, Kelli and Christina were stay-at-home-moms who had always wanted a YouTube channel but Imposter Syndrome always got in the way. If you want to try something, just do it!
  2. Stay consistent. This is tried and true advice, but it’s important. Luckily, Kelli and Christina found an upload schedule that kept them consistent without overworking themselves, and they don’t merely rely on consistency to grow their channel, but staying consistent tells your viewers that they can count on you to show up for them, so they will show up for you too.
  3. Put in the work. Kelli and Christina both invested time and effort into the bootcamp and it paid off. They were able to triple their subscribers in just a couple months by trusting the process and putting in the work.

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS

Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.

Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!

Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!

THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT

After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!

  • 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
  • Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
  • Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
  • Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
  • Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
  • Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
  • Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
