Ready to set your goals for 2022 and be more productive? This week I have Mariana Vieira from Mariana’s Study Corner with me on the show! Mariana works full time in a 9-5 job in the legal field, maintains her popular YouTube channel with over 600k subscribers, and offers private productivity coaching. Needless to say, she’s a time management queen, and her channel is all about building strong and smart productivity habits.

Mariana started her channel in 2015 while she was in law school. She had been searching for productivity videos because she felt like she needed it, but she wasn’t finding much out there. She realized that if she learned more about productivity and study tips, she could be the one to put that content out there to fill that void. She only had one video on her channel for about 6 months, but it had gotten some comments and people asking for more. So she started posting weekly and getting even more positive feedback. After a year, she had about 1,000 subscribers. Her growth since then has been fairly consistent. Mariana works a 9-5 job as a legal advisor in the financial law and banking sector and offers productivity consulting on top of managing her YouTube channel. So how is she able to manage all of that?

“A lot of productivity has to do with time management.”

Time Management

In order to stay on top of all her commitments, Mariana micromanages her schedule and pretty much blocks every minute of her day (even on the weekends!), including her working hours at her job 9-5, and her commute to and from. Mariana tries to make everything count, but she does still try to separate her personal life from her professional life too. A crucial part of making it all work is learning how to delegate. She’s hired a video editor which means she spends the bulk of your allotted YouTube time researching, writing, and filming. Typically, in addition to her 40 hour work week, Spends at least 15 hours (sometimes as much as 25 hours) on her channel… and that’s WITH outsourcing the editor! Mariana makes sure to take nice lunch breaks so she can unwind, and when she feels like she needs to take a break, rather than mindlessly scroll on social media, she does something she really enjoys doing, like reading a book or calling her family. She also tries to enjoy her weekends as much as possible to bring some balance to her busy schedule. At first, it was hard to “do it all,” but she’s gotten used to it, and really, productivity is all about mindset.

Planning Ahead

Mariana plans her videos out in quarters or semesters. Right now, she has all her video topics planned out until april. This helps her space out her topics evenly so she has a nice variety for her subscribers. Her audience keeps evolving, and she has a mix of people watching her channel. In order to keep everyone happy, she’s going to be adding more lifestyle aspects to her channel in addition to productivity. At first, she didn’t really appear much in her videos in front of the camera, but going forward into 2022, she’s going to be sharing more of herself and her personal experiences so her subscribers can really get to know her more. Mariana also prefers to film in bulk, always on the weekends, so she can stay ahead of her filming schedule in case anything should come up and she’s unable to film.

Why keep the 9-5 job?

Most people I interview on the podcast have quit their day jobs once their YouTube channel is lucrative, so why hasn’t Mariana left? First, Mariana studied hard to be qualified and she does enjoy the job and she does enjoy working in an office. She enjoys the routine. But mostly, she feels uncomfortable telling people to be productive if she’s not living a similar life. She can only know how to advise people how to manage their time if she has a similar challenge.

Common Productivity Mistakes

The #1 mistake Mariana sees is a lack of purpose and not being aligned with your values. You have to have a reason to defeat your laziness instinct. When you know what you need to do and you’re motivated to do it, everything else will start falling into place. Mariana finds that productivity tends to be 60-70% motivation and 30-40% techniques and methods. Ask yourself, where do your values lie? What do you like to do? What do you really want to do? Why are you unhappy? How will being better at productivity help you? Why do you want to quit? Finding what you love and what makes you happy boost productivity, because being excited about something is motivating.

It’s also important to have realistic expectations, whether that’s trying to take on too much too quickly (as people are wont to do in the new year) or having limiting beliefs and quitting too quickly.

Final Thoughts

What Mariana loves the most about YouTube is having a voice and talking about what she’s passionate about. It’s important for anyone just starting on YouTube to follow their own voice, and don’t follow the trends too much. Don’t just do what everyone else is doing. Find what makes you unique.

If you’re trying to figure out how to work YouTube into your life, whether you’re a student or you’re busy with a job, start by blocking your time and creating a schedule and a routine that you can stick to.When you need to unwind and relax, do something you love, like going for a walk or reading a book, rather than staying glued to your phone!

“If I didn’t micromanage my time very well, I would never be able to be consistent on Youtube, and if I wasn’t consistent on YouTube, I think that by now I would have probably dropped it.”

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS

Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.

Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!

Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!

THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT

After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!

  • 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
  • Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
  • Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
  • Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
  • Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
  • Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
  • Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
