Jaime Amor writes and presents the Cosmic Kids Yoga series on YouTube and on the Cosmic Kids App. She brings a mix of Mary Poppins meets Fred Rogers meets Wonder Woman! With over 340m views on her channel and over 1.3m subscribers, Jaime has spent the past 10 years introducing kids, parents and teachers to yoga in a totally unique way: blending storytelling with yoga to make it fun and engaging for kids. Not only has Cosmic Kids amassed a huge following for the yoga adventures, they have also created a host of other series to include mindfulness, relaxation, music and games to create an entertaining package of high quality content to make a positive difference to kids’ wellbeing worldwide.
I was so excited to be able to have Jaime on the show. As many of my followers and subscribers know, I am pretty strict about limiting screen time for my kids, but we LOVE Cosmic Kids Yoga, and it was a dream come true for my kids to be able to meet Jaime after the interview! For all the moms out there, Jaime’s channel is a wonderful one for children! It is beautifully done and so well-thought out and I highly recommend it.
Getting started on YouTube
Jaime used to be a yoga teacher in schools, doing after school clubs and lunch clubs. She was an entertainer, actres, and yogi for many years, and she saw an opportunity to combine storytelling, mindfulness, and movement for children. Her yoga classes took off and she found herself teaching 15 classes a week. Her husband eventually persuaded her to film the classes. She started putting them on YouTube and it became a perfect storm of bringing healthy content to a platform that was already so intuitive for kids. By putting her videos online, it gave children agency to do yoga when they wanted to.
Her first video was posted in 2012, which makes 10 years of Cosmic Kids Yoga! Her channel began to grow rapidly, with teachers being the first ambassadors to use the videos in their classrooms as they were both useful and valuable to teaching. Jaime really listened to what kids, parents, and teachers alike wanted and needed.
“Every time I watch a Disney movie, I’m thinking, what are they trying to teach me? What are they trying to teach the kids? And then I zone in on that.”
Monetizing a Children’s Channel
Jaime got started on YouTube long before monetization and he’s becoming like a hive for different platforms and opportunities for them. The ad revenue was never big, especially when compared to other creators… they get millions and millions of views but the ad revenue was not reflective of that, so from a very early stage, they had to think about diversification. Jaime and her husband created an online teacher training for teaching yoga to children, which then helped fund the production of their YouTube videos. They also developed a desktop app to be able to view all the content without all the firewalls and ads that come along with YouTube.
Admittedly, getting people to purchase the app when so much of their content was available online for free was a hard sell, so to incentivize people to buy the app, they had to both load it up with content that wasn’t available on their channel and sell it as a much safer space for children that would shield them from some of the inappropriate things on YouTube. While Cosmic Kids wants their videos to be accessible to all children, they still need to be able to fund their videos.
They also started doing brand sponsorships during the pandemic, but in doing so, they made sure to stay true to the way they do things, and reconciled it by giving something that was useful and helpful, like a hand washing themed yoga video. They also got to work with McCartney Productions in conjunction with Paul McCartney’s new children’s book.
Producing a Children’s Channel
So how does Jaime create these incredible videos? When Jaime has an idea, she dives into the story and starts writing the script to put her own unique spin on it, and figures out ways that yoga brings it to life. She rehearses it until it’s memorized and seamless, and films it in a green screen studio. Her husband, Martin, guides the technical aspect of the production. They let their videographer know what their vision is and then they film it after about a week of rehearsing, usually all in one take! Jaime treats filming as if she was going into a classroom full of children or performing on a stage in a theater.
Then it gets sent to their editor, a very talented Ukrainian video editor that they love so much, they helped him and his family leave Ukraine. Then, Martin adds the sound and the music. When all is said and done, it can take about 10-12 weeks for ONE video!
Final Thoughts
Whether you are creating beauty content or yoga videos for kids, most content creators face similar challenges. When it comes to YouTube, you have to be consistent, you have to dig in, and you have to keep going. Try not to get swallowed by statistics and comparison. Block out all the negativity, but take the positivity to heart. Sometimes we as content creators can find ourselves spending too much time in front of a screen, but give yourself a screen time limit, and make sure you are getting outside in nature to just breathe. When negotiating with brands, be up front at the start about what the brand will do for you and what you will do for the brand so that you can immediately establish a win-win relationship.
I love Jaime’s channel so much and I love how much my kids enjoy it. Her superpower is her ability to talk to and communicate with kids. She really knows how to use language that they get and she helps them understand things about themselves and the world, which is such a gift!
“You really have to keep going and be as consistent, as positive and as uniquely you as you can.”
