I’m so excited for my audience to meet Shelly. She is such a light! She has such an infectious, positive personality and energy about her that I just know you all will fall in love with. She went from obsessing over SEO and following a rigid formula that didn’t work for her or her channel to focusing on who her ideal audience was and creating content for them. Her channel went from dull and boring to a thriving reflection of Shelly’s outgoing personality and her knowledge. She is proof that sometimes, you don’t need 100k subscribers, just a loyal base. Shelly was able to dig deep and really identify the purpose of her channel and then formulate a plan based on that. When you find that target market, you find the people who really appreciate you.
Shelly has a very successful offline business as a dietician, but she decided to start a YouTube channel to help promote her business. When she started, she was very “SEO stuck,” meaning that every course she took was hammering down SEO, which made her channel boring… but Shelly is not boring. She has bright, fire engine red hair and a HUGE personality to go with it. Her channel was absolutely not reflective of the person she was. She wasn’t getting a lot of views, she was getting a lot of negative comments, and things weren’t working out. It was too stiff and formulaic for her.
Trying just one more YouTube Course
She decided to give my Bootcamp a shot, and this one was different than all the ones she had taken. She realized that she wasn’t doing YouTube the way she needed to. Instead of obsessing over SEO, she instead dove into focusing on her ideal audience: who are they? What do they want? What do they need? What are their deep desires? What are they struggling with? Once you figure out who your people are, you will get that loyal crowd. It doesn’t necessarily matter if you don’t have 100K subscribers. Sometimes it’s all about having a loyal base.
“When you intensely figure out why you want to do a channel, that’s what makes you successful.”
Shelly’s biggest YouTube breakthrough
By dialing down on who her ideal audience was, she realized that they like quick, cheap recipes. So while she started with education-style videos, there came a point where it got repetitive, and that’s where the recipe videos came in. She got more and more comments on the recipe videos, YouTube started to pick up her content and pump it out to more people, and she saw a crazy increase in subscribers. With her target market in mind, and a little boost from YouTube, she tweaked her strategy just a bit more: she kept creating her educational-style videos, but as shorts, while keeping the recipes as long form videos. It was, quite literally, chef’s kiss.
Shelly actually films her cooking videos on her phone! You value time as you run a business, and it’s just not practical for her to put up a whole set up, but it works for her, especially when such a large portion of her audience are busy moms who are looking for someone down-to-earth and relatable to teach them some quick, healthy recipes to make for their families.
Her goal for YouTube was never to get 100k, though it would be great! It was more to help build her business as a marketing tool. As part of the bootcamp and coaching, Shelly was asked where she saw herself in 2-3 years. She knew she wanted to develop a course, and that’s how she started with the education and cooking videos, which will eventually lead to creating an online course. She’s also started building her email list in preparation for it. Always create what your people are asking you for!
Final Thoughts
My goal is to help my clients develop a sharp YouTube instinct. Of course, I use SEO tools like TubeBuddy here and there, but it’s mostly just to confirm that instinct, rather than use it as a crutch. So many people have that instinct already, they just don’t realize it yet. Shelly now has refined her instinct and is creating content that not only reflects who she is, but also, serves her audience (literally).
Shelly’s advice? Don’t get stuck in the SEO! It’s ok to look it up, but don’t spend hours looking it up or writing descriptions. You’re so much better off and your time is better spent creating a better video.
Thinking about investing in the bootcamp but you’re on the fence? If you want to do this for a long time, just join the course. If you want to do this for your business, if you want to do it to make money, if you wanna do this for REAL, this is the place for you. It’s the most realistic course, because there’s not a one size fits all formula for YouTube!
Oh, and… when it comes to sponsorships, whatever you think you should charge, double it!
“It doesn’t matter where you start, it matters where you end.”
