How Studying Her YouTube Analytics Transformed Her YouTube Channel with Kimmy Hughes of She’s In Her Apron : The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 238

“People just want REAL. They want to be able to know they aren’t alone.”

Be sure to check out my FREE eBook: How to Create Impactful Content During COVID-19 Pandemic! This 32 page guide will walk you through how to create content during a global crisis PLUS it includes over 75 YouTube video ideas that you can use TODAY to grow your channel!

Kimmy is a supportive wife and mother to four wonderful children who started her YouTube channel, “She’s In Her Apron” in 2012.  She has reached women all around the world spreading the message of P.O.P. (Progress Over Perfection). Now with over 45,000,000 views, Kimmy continues to share her homemaking life’s ups and downs, tips, and tricks that she has learned along the way.  Kimmy’s passion is to help others see their worth and know they’re not alone in their homemaking journey.

Kimmy was inspired by Cas of Clutterbug (another YTPH guest! Check out that interview here) to get onto YouTube. With her experience in video editing that she learned all about in high school, everything just fell into place. Her channel started off slowly and she only uploaded about twice a month initially. When she started to gain traction, she really started to learn more by watching other YouTubers and realized how much her channel could take off, and how she could truly reach more people. She then started posting once a week, and started working her way up to posting 5x per week! She maintained a 5x a week upload schedule for years, but it eventually took its toll. Ironically, it’s when she cut back down again when her channel REALLY exploded. Her “Day in the Life” videos started becoming immensely popular, and her viewers became totally invested in her family, and while her children were integral players in her channel, she realized one day that for the safety and privacy of her children, she no longer wanted to feature them. Going back to her “why,” her goal was never to have a family channel, but to have a relatable channel for struggling women and mothers to know they are not alone.

“I had to go back to my original why.”

Kimmy struggles with ADHD, and as a busy mother of four, she aims to create relatable content, and it’s worked. She has received an incredible response for her channel from women from all over who truly resonate with her journey, her struggles, and her message.  With her ADHD, she needs routines as much for herself as she does for her children and her family. She has viewers who have been there since the beginning, and who have stuck by her through all the different transitions of her channel. To Kimmy, those loyal subscribers feel more like family. Sometimes even people who don’t have kids, or who don’t cook still gravitate to her channel because they like her as a person and feel a connection to her. What I love the most about Kimmy is her motto: progress over perfection, or P.O.P. Progress over perfection: whether that’s in your YouTube channel, or in your life.

P.O.P wherever you are in your life.”

3 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. Analytics: Studying her analytics helped Kimmy really hone in on how to improve her channel. The crazy thing is, her viewers LOVE the longer videos, so actually, Kimmy focuses on her watch time, not necessarily her views. Sometimes her videos with less view have way highway watch times. By studying and analyzing her analytics, she’s been able to figure out what is working for her channel. She focuses on creating evergreen content, and really thinks about what her viewers can take from her videos in the time they sit and watch them
  2. Know your why. Kimmy’s “why” is so strong and it’s the driving force behind her channel. She wants women out there to know that you can overcome imperfections. She wants women out there to know they are not alone. Sharing her journey and her progress over perfection is what drives her to continue to create.
  3. JUST DO IT. Kimmy’s advice to people thinking about starting a channel? You’re not too old. You’re totally cool enough and smart enough, so JUST DO IT. Go all in right in the beginning. People will find you, and they will like you! You NEVER know what can happen, and you never know who you will be able to bless.

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS

Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.

Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!

Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!

THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT

After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!

  • 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
  • Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
  • Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
  • Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
  • Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
  • Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
  • Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
