How She Quit Her Full Time Job at 50k YouTube Subscribers with Cassie Thorpe: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 276

“I did the bootcamp and it was single-handedly the best thing that’s happened for my YouTube channel, 100%.”

Be sure to check out my FREE eBook: How to Create Impactful Content During COVID-19 Pandemic! This 32 page guide will walk you through how to create content during a global crisis PLUS it includes over 75 YouTube video ideas that you can use TODAY to grow your channel!

Cassie Thorpe is a luxury fashion video-creator. As a “self-diagnosed luxury addict,” Cassie makes videos for women and men who want to feel confident and fabulous through fun, light-hearted advice on designer fashion. Based in London, UK but with a wide-reaching audience across the globe, Cassie creates a range of video content from styling videos and reviews to advice, sharing her experiences with various luxury products and shopping vlogs.

Cassie started off as a fashion blogger. She LOVED fashion, but actually found that she hated blogging. She started a YouTube channel and quickly realized that her personality and passion shined through more on video than in writing. As her enjoyment for YouTube grew, she stumbled up on the YouTube Power Hour Podcast and signed up for my Bootcamp, which ended up being the single greatest thing she has ever done for her channel. When she started my bootcamp, she had 300 subscribers, but today, 2 years later, she now has over 50k subscribers! Her breakthrough came when she figured out her niche. At 300 subscribers, nobody was searching for “Cassie Thorpe travel vlog” on YouTube. Nobody really cared about that! So what would people care about? Cassie realized that she had a passion for luxury fashion… so much so that her friends often came to her for advice on it. The lightbulb went off and she realized that if her IRL friends would come to her for advice on luxury fashion, so would people on YouTube. From there, she honed in on her niche and started to build a community on YouTube. The first 1,000 subscribers were the hardest for her to get, but once she got to 1,000, they just started to roll in more and more!

“I think those soul-searching lessons are the ones that really, to this day, continue to drive my content.”

What Cassie really found the most useful in the bootcamp were the lessons that really delved into soul searching and digging deep to bring out why you are on YouTube and what value you are trying to bring on YouTube. These lessons continue to impact her today! After doing the inner work, the practical lessons about tech, SEO, and more built upon that foundation and helped Cassie learn how to give her channel the best chance of being seen. It was the combination of theory and practicality that gives everyone in the bootcamp a well-rounded YouTube education and gives them the tools and the knowledge they need to succeed. The education plus the community of the bootcamp, (the private group, and the group coaching calls) gives everyone in my bootcamp an invaluable network and support system where they can learn from one another, bounce ideas off each other, and garner support and guidance on their channels. Once she hit 50K subscribers, Cassie realized it was now or never, and the pipe dream of quitting her 9-5 corporate job for YouTube was finally a reality. She had some doubt and some hesitation, but she went for it. It was scary, but exciting! Cassie has ensured that keeping herself to a schedule and maintaining structure as if she was still working that 9-5 has helped her stay on track, accountable, and successful. If Cassie can quit her job for YouTube, so can you! Why not just go for it?

“I know this is what I want to do for the rest of my life, hopefully.”

3 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. Always stick to your niche. When Cassie figured out her niche, it was the “a-ha” moment she needed to refocus her channel. She realized that what her friends came to her for is what people on the internet would come to her for. Her passion for luxury fashion shines through in her videos and keeps her loyal subscribers coming back for more.
  2. Stay consistent. Most of the guests on my show say that consistency is key, but I really can’t emphasize it enough. Being consistent shows your subscribers that you are taking your content seriously. If you take your content seriously, so will they! Plus, every video you put out there into the void is another opportunity for the algorithm to pick up one of your videos and run with it.
  3. Fake it ‘til you make it! Your subscribers deserve the best version of you from the beginning. Don’t wait until you have 50K subscribers to show up as the best version of you. If you act like you have 100K or even a million subscribers from the beginning, you will actually get there, and you will attract subscribers with your passion, work ethic, and authority.

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS

Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.

Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!

Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!

THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT

After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!

  • 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
  • Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
  • Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
  • Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
  • Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
  • Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
  • Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
