Before her YouTube career, Marnie Goldberg obtained a master’s degree in education and was a 2nd grade teacher, reading specialist, and then a full-time wife, mother and volunteer.  In 2010, Marnie started the YouTube channel MsGoldgirl™ to use her background in education to share her expertise with like-minded women.  Now, MsGoldgirl™ has a following of 169,000 subscribers and almost 36 million channel views. Marnie’s videos feature product reviews, tutorials, hauls, personal vlogs and lifestyle advice. In September 2017, she was named San Antonio Fashion Blogger of the Year. Marnie’s accolades also include being named a Top 200 LTK influencer since 2012. She is also the designer of the Marnie Satchel-the top selling handbag for GiGi New York in 2021, available at Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.

I love getting to interview the amazing women I have the honor and privilege working with, and Marnie Goldberg is someone I have so much admiration for. When Marnie, she was 12 years into her YouTube Journey and had over 100,000 subscribers. She was making great regular income through AdSense, affiliates, and sponsorships. From the outside looking in, everything seemed pretty great, right?

But Marnie has a competitive side, and she knew there could be something more. She felt stagnant and while she had achieved a lot of success on her own, she wanted to see those numbers grow again. As she took stock of everything in her life, both on a personal and professional level, she realized that she had been coasting. And she could have continued to coast… by all accounts she had been successful across all her metrics, but she knew she could achieve more, and it would require a change on her end. She was ready to take the plunge.

“I finally acknowledged that I had been coasting, and that I was ready to make a change.”

Getting in the right mental space

Marnie fought me so hard in the beginning, and how could she not? She was a consummate professional with 12 years of experience growing a YouTube channel successfully, her way. Nobody likes to be told that there is a better way to do something that they thought was the “right” way. Marnie had to accept that she wasn’t going to always like what I was going to tell her, but she had to deal with it anyway. Creators are what they are because they’re not great at following rules or fitting into a box, specifically the 9-to-5 box. Having someone tell a creator how to do something isn’t something they’re typically ok with, but sometimes you need that coach to be able to come in and objectively tell you what to do in order to change. But little by little, Marnie started implementing the changes I suggested, and it started to pay off.

Marnie’s breakthroughs

I make all of my 1:1 students do the lessons in my Zero to Influence Youtube Bootcamp as part of the coaching. Why? Because it’s important, and yo have to do the inner work first. Marnie admittedly is not into introspection, reflection, or self care (“woowoo baloney” as she calls it). But despite her resistance, she had her first true lightbulb moment doing this inner work. She realized she never made it clear in her own mind or to her audience who she was talking to in her videos and why. It sounds simple, but it’s not!

She also realized that she was only making “hub” content (content for existing followers), which is fine, but how are you supposed to get new subscribers? Why would anyone who didn’t know her know what the heck she was talking about? It’s like starting a book in the middle rather than in the beginning. Now she makes more videos that answer questions, and has changed some existing titles to videos she’d already uploaded to reframe them as if they were answering a question or a pain point to a potential subscriber.

Finally, Marnie never thought of a title or what a thumbnail should look like before she sat down to film. Now she does. This planning part has been crucial and has made for a much more focused experience. It’s easier for her to edit now, and planning more ahead of time has streamlined the entire creative process from beginning to end. It’s what you have to do before you sit down to film that matters most.

“I learned how to change my mindset from a hobby to a business.”

Seeing the numbers

Marnie and I started working together at the end of June, and within the first week of working with me and implementing some slight tweaks I had suggested, she started seeing results. By mid-July when she really started putting everything into practice, she started to see more and more green arrows. One of the things she fought particularly hard on was titles. Marnie is not one for provocative titles. She finally gave in around the beginning of October, and when she did, she had a video get 20k views in a matter of hours (for context, before working together, she was getting about 10,000 views per video). That video went viral and had a domino effect of increasing the views on her other videos as well.

In our time together, Marnie was able to 3.5x her views, 4x her Adsense Revenue, and she gained 40,000 new subscribers in 4 months. That’s nearly a third of the subscribers she had after 12 years on YouTube. Even an old dog can learn new tricks!

Final thoughts

YouTube is a business, and you need to approach it like a business. Go in with a plan and have a set concept of boundaries. Learn the medium! Soak up as much information as you can to learn Youtube inside and out. You can’t just press play on your iphone and expect to become a famous YouTuber. In fact, and this might be controversial, don’t go into it thinking you’re going to become a famous YouTuber. Going into it thinking you’re going to make money is a fool’s errand because it’s not a guarantee.

There’s always room at the table for somebody new. There’s nobody like you on YouTube because there is only one You. Be really who you are, because if it really takes off, it will be hard to maintain a facade for something you are not, and it’s not sustainable.

“YouTube is a business, and you need to approach it like a business.”
