Lorry Hill has been interested in what makes a person physically beautiful for as long as she can remember. She’s spent most of her life entrenched in the world of beauty and make-up, but above all, plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures. Her unique access to the world of plastic surgeons through a private network of friends and associates has given her wisdom and knowledge, and although she is not a medical doctor, she has an extremely well-informed opinion based on her own experiences and her talent for discerning what facial feature combinations are objectively beautiful. Her channel informs viewers of the best plastic surgery procedures that achieve the best results, as well as those that should be avoided. She has over 246,000 subscribers.
Lorry started her social media journey as a fashion influencer on Instagram, but she was doing a lot of work and spending a lot of money for very little money in return. She started a friendship with YouTuber Risa Does Makeup, and expressed interest in getting on YouTube. She wasn’t that good at makeup, but she did have one thing she was both passionate and knowledgeable about: plastic surgery. When she expressed that she wanted to start a channel about it, Risa warned that Lorry might bear the brunt of a lot of hate for it. Her channel began talking about basic surgeries and procedures, but Lorry never had any intention for it to become big, nor did she think it was possible. She wanted for it to be a fun hobby that she could possibly make a few bucks on.
“The reason I was able to make this channel is because I have a long history of plastic surgery.”
About a year into her channel, she was talking to one of her friends who was talking about Bella Hadid and how beautiful she was. When Lorry highlighted all the possible cosmetic procedures Bella has likely had done, her friend was in shock and disbelief. That’s when Lorry decided to make the video that would change the trajectory of her channel forever: her first celebrity analysis video. In the video, Lorry discussed all the possible surgeries that Bella Hadid had to achieve the look she has today. The video went viral, and within 3 months, Lorry had over 100K subscribers on YouTube, and people wanted more. The suggestions of other celebrities started pouring in and Lorry, wanting to take advantage of the overnight success, buckled down and churned out these requests. What started out as a fun hobby is now a full-time job.
So how long does it take for Lorry to create one of these videos?
It takes her a whopping 20-40 hours for a single celebrity analysis video, and the most time-consuming part of the process is finding the media like before and after photos, which is easier said than done. The photos have to be authentic, without any retouching, with certain angles. She works really hard to find the best photos and it bothers her when people comment about lighting and angles. This process is so precise that it’s impossible for Lorry to outsource it since it’s so dependent on her expertise. She can usually put out about 3-4 videos per month.
How does Lorry know so much about plastic surgery?
Lorry has been studying plastic surgery for 20+ years and has gotten really good at identifying procedures based on what she can see. In her early 20s, Lorry pursued acting in LA and was exposed to different kinds of plastic surgery, and met many people in the industry. She fell deep into the hobby of looking at and studying procedures, and she’s also had some work done herself.
What kind of feedback has she gotten from her viewers?
It’s been pretty mixed. She has a core group of superfans who love whatever she puts out, but then there are others who love her until she does an analysis video on their favorite celebrity, and then they turn on her. She saw this happen a lot when she analyzed Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber.
Response from celebrities and the medical community
Lorry has had responses from celebrity makeup artists or those close to celebrities and most of them verified Lorry’s assumptions. She now has some informants and contacts who give her more inside information. Sometimes doctors reach out to her, usually for promotion. Lorry doesn’t always agree with plastic surgeons on social media. Some surgeons are creating similar content and analyses as Lorry, and often they credit her for the concept. But a lot of the time, she believes the surgeons aren’t agreeing with what she said, and it’s because they are busy people and unable to put in 20-40 hours of work on it like she is.
“The longest part of my video process is not the analysis, it’s the adding of media so that you guys can see it on your end.”
