How did 63-Year-Old YouTube Newbie Kimberly of Pretty Over Fifty Explode her Following in a Crowded, Saturated Niche?: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 317
“I understood the power of keywords. I understood the power of being focused and niched down.”

You’re never too old to get on YouTube! Kimberly of Pretty Over 50 started her channel at the age of 62. After a lifetime of not taking care of her skin, it was in pretty bad shape, so she decided to start a YouTube channel to chronicle whether or not she could “fix” her skin. What started as a fun, engaging, creative outlet for her turned into something beyond her wildest dreams!
Kimberly had a full career that spanned over 35 years before she started her YouTube channel. Since she had been a business owner for so long, she really understood that it was on her to build the framework and create meaningful content, and once she had a vision, she saw the business aspect of YouTube starting to form. She was able to see what she needed to put together to give herself the best shot possible. Her experience in graphic design and illustration helped the design aspect of her channel (and thumbnails) come very easily to her, but the camera? That’s another story. She’s had the same camera since she started, and she knows how to turn it on and off and that’s about it! She’s learned how to edit as she’s gone, and she’s gone from a tiny studio apartment where she used a card table and a sheet behind her on the wall to a newer, much more spacious recording space!
“That algorithm can really make or break your channel.”
One other thing that helped her even as a YouTube newbie was that she immediately understood the importance of keywords and niching down. Kimberly wanted to target the over 50 market, so she knew to include that in her keywords and titles. Since Kimberly was a beauty consumer before she was a creator, she was especially inspired by Angie from Hot and Flashy (who we have also had on the show!). One of the things I teach in my Zero to Influence YouTube Bootcamp is the importance of knowing your audience and Kimberly instantly knew exactly who she was creating content for: over 50 women. Kimberly has had one video go viral about a year into her channel. It took about 45-60 days after she posted it, but once YouTube picked up the video, it took off. She got 30-40k new subscribers in a month, because the algorithm helped women in the 50+ community find her. The video now has 1.6 million views and earned her $15k! Kimberly has experimented with how many videos she uploads a week, but she’s found a sweet spot at two. Interestingly enough, uploading more times a week has not given her more adsense revenue!
What’s unique about Kimberly’s channel and what sets her apart is that viewers can come to her channel and see a slow, steady progression with healthier looking skin. When she started her channel, her skin was admittedly in horrible condition, and viewers can really see improvement in her skincare journey! She specializes in videos about at-home, affordable anti-aging skincare that are accessible to anyone!
“I’ve learned along with my audience the whole time, because I knew nothing about skincare in the beginning and my skin looked like it. I’ve learned so much over the course of time.”
3 Key Interview Takeaways:
- You’re never too old for YouTube. Kimberly had a long career before posting a single video. She was in her 60s when she started her channel! YouTube is for everyone, and you should never let anything discourage you from getting started if being a YouTuber is something you really want to do!
- Know your audience. Kimberly’s quick success can be attributed to her business savvy instincts, and one of them is knowing exactly who she was creating content for. By knowing she wanted to target over 50 women on YouTube, she was able to incorporate that into all of her keywords and titles and once the YouTube algorithm picked up a video, thousands of members of her ideal audience were able to find her channel.
- Find something that sets you apart. The beauty niche is fairly saturated, and even though it’s less saturated for creators specifically creating for 50+ women, it’s still important to find something that makes you unique from other creators. For Kimberly, it’s that she started with bad skin, learned with her audience, and her viewers can see how progressive her skincare routines have been! Being able to see a steady progression builds trust in her subscribers.

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS
Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.
Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!
Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!
THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT
After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!
- 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
- Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
- Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
- Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
- Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
- Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
- Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
