Autumn Bates is a Certified Clinical Nutritionist with her masters in Nutrition and Human Performance. She works with thousands of men and women around the world in achieving their wellness dreams without counting calories through her programs, videos, blog, Facebook group and individual consultations. She’s obsessed with food and believes that eating meals you enjoy is an essential aspect to a happy life.
Autumn came from a blogging background, and didn’t really know much about YouTube until her mom suggested she get on it. After making her first video, Autumn realized that it was a great way to reach more people and connect with likeminded people. The only “plan” she had when she started was to use YouTube as a host for the videos for her blog. She uploaded her first video in June of 2018, but it took about a year for it to take off after a few months of taking her channel seriously and posting consistent content. Two of her videos went viral the following year and she gained about 100K subscribers. Those two viral videos were posted-back-to-back and Autumn initially thought they were total failures, because it took MONTHS for them to get views. But once they did, those videos started gaining more and more traction and attracting subscribers to her channel. What about those videos made them viral? Autumn believes that the titles she crafted for them sparked controversy and interest, which made people want to click them.
“It really comes down to two things… being really bold about what it is that you believe in, and then also just providing the most amazing information that’ll actually help people.”
Once her YouTube channel started to take off, Autumn realized she had an uphill battle ahead to really learn the ins and outs of YouTube. She began studying the psychology and strategy of YouTube as she learned the systems and tech. She found that learning what people respond to and how they respond to it is how you can really fine tune your content strategy. What do people like to see? How do they like to hear and see it? What makes someone click a video? Autumn totally immersed herself in learning about YouTube and how it works. Once she figured out what worked, she could dissect and perfect it and remove what wasn’t working. It took a lot of trial and error to figure out the kind of videos that worked for her, but she soon realized that what worked for other people just wasn’t her or didn’t work for her, and vise versa. Because Autumn plays into controversial topics that spark strong opinions, she got a lot of backlash, but she learned to roll with the punches and understand that every successful YouTuber gets backlash, and that it’s best not to engage with people who aren’t truly there to hear your message. Facing backlash can be scary, especially if you have a controversial view, but you can’t be vanilla on YouTube. If you don’t incite passion or emotion, you won’t grow on YouTube. YouTube has completely transformed Autumn’s life, business, and relationships, and no amount of backlash could ever pull her away from it!
“The biggest benefit from what YouTube has given me is that I have my own voice. I am in control of that. No one else can tell me what it is that they want to share and what they want to spread. I get to share what I think is going to really impact people’s lives.”
3 Key Interview Takeaways
- Don’t compare yourself to others. What works for someone else won’t necessarily work for you and vise versa, and the more you compare yourself to the success of others, the more unhappy you will be. What should you do instead? Go to your favorite YouTubers and look at their first video to see how they started, not how they are now.
- Passion is important. If you’re truly passionate about your topic or message, YouTube will be easy. YouTube is A LOT of work. Churning out consistent content can be a full-time job in itself, and Autumn finds herself constantly thinking about her channel. When you’re excited about what you do, it’s a joy to always be thinking about what you’re doing
- Don’t feed the trolls. Backlash and hate is an unfortunate part of the YouTuber territory, and it gets worse as you gain subscribers. Autumn’s content tends to spark passion and debate, but her advice is to not even respond to negative comments on your channel. It does nothing for your mental health. These people are not looking to hear your message. Keep your head down and keep going.

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS
Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.
Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!
Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!
THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT
After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!
- 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
- Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
- Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
- Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
- Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
- Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
- Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
