How a Beginner BLEW UP to 100k YouTube Subscribers 7 Months in a VERY Competitive Niche (Fashion) – Samantha Guerrero The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 298

“It’s ok to create your own pathway.”

Be sure to check out my FREE eBook: How to Create Impactful Content During COVID-19 Pandemic! This 32 page guide will walk you through how to create content during a global crisis PLUS it includes over 75 YouTube video ideas that you can use TODAY to grow your channel!

Samantha Guerrero was born in Venezuela and moved to Canada in 2007. She is a 20-year-old student at the University of Toronto studying history and art history. She started a blog in February of 2020, and in July of 2020, she posted her first YouTube video. Her YouTube channel currently focuses on fashion, lifestyle, and beauty content across instagram and YouTube.

Samantha Guerrero’s YouTube journey is only a year old and it’s truly remarkable, but it all comes down to one thing: passion: passion for fashion and style, and passion for content creation. She grew up obsessed with fashion and developed a European, classic, timeless style, which is something you don’t often see in Canada. She wanted to share her passion, so she started a blog in February of 2020 and started posting on instagram. As the pandemic really accelerated, she decided to try YouTube in July of 2020. YouTube was something far out of Samantha’s comfort zone, but her first video remains one of the videos she is most proud of, as it was something she was really passionate about. She also dove into researching YouTube and familiarizing herself with the platform. She took the time to understand it so that she could make the best and most informed decisions she could for her first videos. After her first video, she was consistent and stuck to 2 videos a week for a long time. By September, she hit 10K subscribers, just 3 months after posting her video, and she had no idea that this rate of growth was abnormal. In October, 2 of her videos went big and she gained another big influx of subscribers.

“People can always tell when you’re passionate about something and feel comfortable talking about it.”

Samantha loves every part of the process: she loves the shopping for pieces (a big part that people don’t usually see), sitting in front of the camera, the editing… all of it. She really started studying her analytics to see what was working and what wasn’t working, and she started focusing and honing in on what people seemed to love the most. Her mom is her “momager,” her sounding board, and her brainstorm partner. Samantha has also started moving towards the idea of buying fewer pieces, but at higher quality. She’s still in university and has cut back on her course load to accommodate her YouTube channel, since 12 hour days are not unusual for her, nor is editing until 2 or 3am. She’s been trying to get herself into a 9-5 routine so she doesn’t burn out. Editing takes the most time, but Samantha is so passionate about it, that she doesn’t mind. Being a content creator is a non-traditional job that isn’t covered in university. It’s not like being a lawyer or a doctor or an accountant, but Samantha has strived to forge her own path, and follow her passions.

“Content creating fits perfectly into my life, and I’m so passionate about it.”

3 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. Take the time to understand the platform. I think part of the reason why Samantha grew so quickly was because she made a concerted effort to understand the ins and outs of YouTube, and she continues to analyze her analytics so she can create content to best cater to what her subscribers love.
  2. Passion is key. Samantha just exudes this kind of passion. You can see it on her face and hear it in her voice. She has a passion for fashion and style and she wanted to share that with the world. People gravitate to her because her passion shines through!
  3. Forge your own path. Samantha’s going to finish her degree, even if it takes her a little longer. Nobody says you have to finish your degree in a certain time frame, or even get a degree at all! “Content creator” isn’t exactly a career they teach you about in school, but that shouldn’t matter!

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS

Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.

Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!

Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!

THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT

After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!

  • 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
  • Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
  • Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
  • Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
  • Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
  • Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
  • Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
