Madeline Mann is the founder of Self Made Millennial and a Human Resources Leader who has helped thousands of people land career defining jobs. Self Made Millennial was named a Top 5 Career Youtube Channel by Career Karma, and the #2 Career-Focused TikTok channel, second only to Gary Vaynerchuk. Mann is a LinkedIn Learning instructor who has been featured on Newsweek, Business Insider, Forbes, and more.
Madeline Mann has a background in HR, and realized that if only people knew what she knew as an HR professional, it could help them. She loved video as a medium and realized there wasn’t a lot of content out there in the career coaching realm for job seekers who had the personality and energy that she did, so she started her channel in 2017. Prior to starting my Zero to Influence YouTube Bootcamp, she had close to 10K subscribers, but she was feeling like she was putting so much time and effort into making her videos, and they were really high quality, but she had to figure out a way to get this amazing content out to more people. She was already posting consistently once a week and getting amazing feedback from her subscribers, but she knew she could make an even bigger impact. She just needed a way to “crack the code.”
“I knew that the impact that could be made with my videos was greater than the impact I was making then.”
When Madeline joined my bootcamp, she was given the tools she needed to crack that code. First, she realized she needed to work more on the thumbnail and the title, and not just as an afterthought. Now, she makes up to SIX thumbnails for EACH video, and continues to work and rework her titles. She no longer will just settle on her first idea, and puts just as much work and time into her thumbnails as she does into her content. Second, she had a breakthrough with what I call OCET: On Camera Energy Transfer. This is how your energy translates on camera and how your viewers see you. Madeline credits her work on her presence on camera to why she has been able to get so many opportunities and exposure across so many platforms. A lot of people do not talk about this and why it’s so important to achieving success on YouTube. Third, it’s not just enough to be told what to do… sometimes we need feedback from others, and it’s this feedback from me and the other bootcampers that really helped her get over the hump. Sometimes we are too close to our content, so getting an outside perspective is crucial. Not only has this bootcamp helped Madeline’s channel tremendously, it began the domino effect of opportunities. YouTube makes it easy to be discovered, and more and more people are hearing about her, she has a presence on other platforms, and she brings her A game to every video.
“Every video is a new opportunity to capture more new people, more new search terms, and more interest.”
3 Key Interview Takeaways
Three Key Takeaways:
- Titles and thumbnails are IMPORTANT. Spend as much time on these as you do on your actual content. Understand how you are phrasing your titles, and make sure it speaks to what people are actually looking for vs. what you think is a cool topic. What do people NEED?
- Get comfortable on camera. Remember that OCET we talked about earlier? You need to bring your true self and get comfortable in front of the camera. Without this, Madeline would not have had the opportunities she did. Your Youtube channel is PROOF that you can show up on camera and knock it out of the park every single time, and that’s what studios and major networks are looking for.
- Put in the work. It’s not about whether this will work for you, it’s whether you will work for it. YouTube takes work. If you’re ready to put in the work, then just do it! Start that channel!

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS
Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.
Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!
Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!
THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT
After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!
- 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
- Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
- Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
- Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
- Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
- Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
- Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
