Do You Need a YouTube Manager? Morgan Stewart from the Beauty Breakdown Reveals: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 212

“You have to protect yourself in this industry. Everyone has their own prerogative and motivation, and so you have to do the research and know your numbers. You need to know what your value is when it comes to talking to these companies.”

Ever wondered if you needed a manager as a YouTube influencer? You won’t want to miss this episode! Beauty YouTuber, Morgan Stewart (from Beauty Breakdown) shares why she doesn’t have a manager, her best advice on what to negotiate for when interviewing for a manager, and how to truly know your own worth. Morgan has grown to over 560,000 subscribers focusing on Korean and Asian skincare, all while being her own advocate and negotiating for herself.

Morgan first created her YouTube channel in 2014 as a general beauty channel, but she gravitated toward Korean and Asian beauty, since her mom is Korean. She found that there weren’t really any English-speakers talking about Korean beauty, or really, a variety of opinions about the products like there were for Western beauty products, so after a trip to Korea with her mom where she went to the beauty stores and asked the sales associates what was popular, she bought it up, brought it home, and dove right in.

“A lot of my inspiration comes from my own personal interest and what I think is kinda different or cool.”

Morgan started with a bit of messy action. She didn’t have a plan, she just made videos about what interested her. After a year and a half, she hit 50,000/60,000 subscribers and was able to leave her day job. Her channel really took off when she did a video about an eyebrow tinting product that got 2.8 million views. To this day, this is her highest viewed video. Morgan gravitates to products that are different, cool, and that she’s never seen before, and relishes in the imperfections that make her viewers love her (in fact, the “Y” on the backdrop has been missing for awhile). For her, it’s not necessarily about what’s aesthetically pleasing, but more about truly putting her personality into her thumbnails and editing. She’s allowed her process to ebb and flow naturally, and her viewers love her for it. Morgan prefers to do everything herself, and even negotiates her own deals. In this episode, Morgan gets real about protecting yourself in this industry, the non-negotiables you should have when hiring a manager, and why knowing how to do it yourself helps you know exactly what’s going on behind the scenes. Enjoy!

“To advocate for yourself, you have to know what really makes you unique or different. What are you really good at? What are your strong points? Why do you think companies would want to approach you or want to work with you?  I think in knowing that value, you can start to piece together what you think you’re worth.”

3 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. Know how to do it yourself. How do you know if they’re good at it, or how do you know that they’re going to represent you well unless you know how to do it yourself? Knowing the process and how it should be done is a great way to make sure they are keeping your best interests at heart, and to be aware of exactly what’s going on behind the scenes.
  2. Non-Negotiables when interviewing for a manager: Exclusivity (will they let you manage your own deals?) is important. How many people are they representing? Asking “what are you going to do for me?” proves whether or not they’ve done their research, looked at your channel, and come up with a plan for you. Be prepared and know your own stats. If you don’t, how can you expect them to?
  3. How to negotiate for yourself: It’s all about trial and error. Learn by making mistakes. Give yourself a chance to learn to do it on your own, and allow yourself the opportunity to stumble and learn as you go. Be diligent in checking the terms (don’t sign your life away for 3 years), and always, always, ALWAYS know your worth.

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS

Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.

Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!

Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!

THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT

After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!

  • 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
  • Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
  • Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
  • Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
  • Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
  • Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
  • Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
