Beauty YouTuber Angelica Nyqvist Quits Job After Joining The Zero to Influence YouTube Bootcamp: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 289

“You need to be good AND consistent.”

Angelica Nyqvist is a Sweden-based beauty YouTuber who recently hit 100k subscribers on her channel. She joined my Zero to Influence Bootcamp in 2020 after making the decision to invest in herself and in her channel, which at the time had become stagnant.

Angelica started her channel in 2015, and by 2020, she had done pretty well for herself and had about 76k subscribers, but her channel had plateaued. Angelica was stagnant and she didn’t understand why. Why were some videos doing well while others weren’t? Why wasn’t she growing? Angelica admits that while she isn’t a perfectionist, she IS the kind of person to ask “why?” and the thought kept popping into her head: “why isn’t this working?” She thought she was doing the same things as other people (she wasn’t), and it seemed to be working for them, so why not her? In 2020, with the pending relocation of her husband’s job, she knew she would have to quit her job for the move. She realized that maybe YouTube could be her full-time job when she moved, so she decided to invest in herself and in her channel and join the Zero to Influence YouTube bootcamp. She thought it would be more SEO-driven, but what she found and what she liked was that the bootcamp focused more on titles and thumbnails, and really dug deeply into the WHY of YouTube. The bootcamp forced Angelica to think about WHO she was making the videos for,  WHY she was making them, and WHEN she would be uploading them to her channel.

“There were so many things I didn’t know about”

One of Angelica’s biggest lightbulb moments when thinking about who she was making her videos for was that she made her channel seem like a close-knit circle. It came off as too exclusive, almost like a “you can’t sit with us” mentality. She never introduced herself in her videos. She realized that she needed to make videos not just for her current subscribers, but also for people who haven’t subscribed yet. By understanding who she needed to make her videos for, she was able to go back, consider how she was talking in her videos, and examine her viewer retention. It was almost like they came to a party they weren’t invited to and slowly backed out. So she started introducing herself in her videos and within a couple months, she noticed a change. Her subscriber count started increasing. She really started experimenting and trying a lot of things to see what she liked and what her viewers liked. Once she really narrowed down her thumbnail and title style, she noticed even more increase. By learning the why and learning how to interpret analytics, she was able to see what wasn’t working and why. She has figured out a nice balance of what she likes to make and what her viewers like to see, and even though she knows something won’t be her top performing video, she likes to sprinkle it in anyway.

“I need to make videos not only for the people that I have, but also for the people I want to have.”

3 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. Be open to change. YouTube and social media overall is changing every day, and just because you love doing tutorials doesn’t mean that you can force someone else to love watching them. Sometimes you have to change up your content. What will be the next thing? What will catch on next? Change with the viewers or expect to get less views. Just because it’s popular right now doesn’t mean it won’t be dead in 6 months and nobody will want to watch.
  2. Watch other YouTubers. You have to watch other YouTubers if you want to be successful. You need to do some market research… not just in your niche but outside it as well.
  3. Put in the work. If you’re going to do something, DO IT. Just joining the program is not going to make your channel better, you have to actually put in the work. But remember, putting in the work =/= consistency alone. Nobody cares about your upload schedule. Don’t post something just to post it. It’s better to miss an upload than to upload something that is not good. Yes, put in the work, but put in QUALITY work with intention.

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS

Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.

Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!

Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!

THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT

After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!

  • 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
  • Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
  • Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
  • Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
  • Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
  • Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
  • Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
