How She Built a Profitable YouTube Channel With Just 35K Subscribers
“You’re never too old, and you’re never too busy. You’d be surprised at the time you can find.”
What if you could build a YouTube channel that earns almost as much as your full-time job without ever quitting that job?
That’s exactly what Lori Lundquist has done.
At 53, Lori has grown her petite fashion YouTube channel to approximately 35,000 subscribers while working a full-time corporate job and raising her teenage son. And here’s the part I love: her YouTube income has grown to rival her corporate paycheck.
She didn’t start with a business plan, a huge audience, or even the intention of making money. She started because she loved clothes and wanted to share her finds with other petite women.
In our conversation, Lori shared how she turned that hobby into a profitable YouTube business, the strategy that helped her channel take off, and why subscriber count isn’t nearly as important as most creators think.
Building a YouTube Channel When You Have No Time
One of the biggest excuses I hear from aspiring YouTube creators is that they simply don’t have enough time.
And listen, I get it. Creating videos is a lot of work!
But Lori is proof that building a successful YouTube channel alongside a full-time career is possible.
During the week, she uses lunch breaks, evenings, and whatever spare moments she can find to research video ideas, plan content, and write scripts. Saturdays are dedicated to filming B-roll, Sundays are for filming her talking-head segments, and Mondays are for thumbnails and video packaging.
That routine allows her to publish two long-form YouTube videos almost every single week.
It requires sacrifice, and Lori is the first to admit that. But she genuinely loves creating content, which is what keeps her going even when her schedule gets overwhelming.
The Simple Mindset Shift That Changed Her YouTube Growth
When Lori and I started working together, she had around 15,000 subscribers. She had already spent roughly two years learning YouTube, but her channel had reached a point where growth felt stagnant.
One of the biggest breakthroughs came when we started talking about how she approached her content.
Lori had been shopping primarily for herself and then sharing whatever she happened to buy. I challenged her to think differently.
What if she approached her YouTube channel like she was a personal shopper for her audience?
Instead of asking what she wanted to buy, she started asking what her viewers needed help finding. What were their biggest shopping frustrations? What styles were they struggling with? What would make their lives easier?
That one shift opened up an entirely new world of content ideas.
She also became more intentional about her thumbnails, filming her own B-roll, improving her production quality, and publishing consistently.
Within roughly a year, her channel grew from around 15,000 to 35,000 subscribers. Lori also noticed significant improvements in views, watch time, sales, and revenue.
Sometimes growing on YouTube isn’t about completely reinventing your channel. It’s about recognizing the opportunities you’re too close to see.
How Lori Monetized Her YouTube Channel Without a Huge Audience
Here’s where Lori’s story gets especially interesting.
For approximately the first year and a half, she barely made any money from YouTube. Even after qualifying for monetization, her Google AdSense earnings were relatively small.
It wasn’t until around two years into her journey that she started seeing meaningful income.
Then she discovered the power of affiliate marketing, YouTube Shopping, and brand partnerships.
Before we started working together, Lori estimates that a good month might have brought in around $1,000. Today, she says her combined AdSense and YouTube Shopping earnings have grown to approximately five times that amount, not including additional affiliate commissions, Amazon earnings, or sponsorships.
And she’s doing this with just 35,000 subscribers.
Her biggest realization? You don’t need a massive audience to make money on YouTube. You need an audience that trusts you.
Lori’s viewers are primarily petite women, many over 50, who struggle to find clothing that fits. At just five feet tall herself, Lori understands their frustrations. She tries on clothing, explains how pieces fit a petite frame, and helps viewers make better purchasing decisions without having to spend hours in dressing rooms.
Her recommendations aren’t just entertaining. They’re genuinely useful.
That’s why her audience buys what she recommends, and why products she features can continue generating affiliate sales for months.
Why Audience Trust Matters More Than Subscriber Count
One of the things I’ve always admired about Lori is how seriously she takes her relationship with her audience.
She doesn’t accept every sponsorship that comes her way. She only wants to promote brands and products she genuinely likes and believes make sense for her viewers.
Her ongoing partnership with Quince is a great example. Lori was already purchasing the brand’s clothing before she ever started working with them professionally.
That authenticity matters.
Over time, she began recognizing familiar names in her comments, receiving emails from viewers, and developing a community of women who returned week after week.
And when those viewers purchase products based on her recommendations, it reinforces something important: she’s providing a service they value.
A channel with 35,000 highly engaged subscribers can be a much stronger business than a channel with 100,000 subscribers who rarely watch or take action.
Why She’s Not Quitting Her Corporate Job
You might assume that once someone’s YouTube income rivals their corporate salary, quitting their job would be the obvious next step.
Not for Lori.
She genuinely enjoys her career, values the security of her benefits and retirement savings, and isn’t interested in giving that up anytime soon.
Instead, she sees YouTube as another asset she’s building for her future.
And I think that’s such an important perspective for women to hear.
You don’t have to quit your career, abandon your financial security, or completely overhaul your life to become a successful YouTube creator.
You can build something alongside the life you already have.
For Lori, YouTube provides additional income, creative fulfillment, a growing community, and the satisfaction of knowing she’s built something entirely on her own.
It’s Never Too Late to Start YouTube
Toward the end of our conversation, Lori shared something that really stuck with me.
She’s 53, works full-time, has a family, and has built a profitable YouTube business from scratch.
She doesn’t have endless free time. She didn’t start with all the answers. And it took years of learning, experimenting, and improving before her channel became the business it is today.
But she started anyway.
Her story is a reminder that YouTube success doesn’t have to look like quitting your job, becoming an influencer in your twenties, or chasing millions of subscribers.
Sometimes success looks like building a second income stream doing something you love, helping an audience you genuinely care about, and creating an asset that could continue supporting you for years to come.
And perhaps the best part of Lori’s story is that her teenage son now gets to see what his mom has built.
For her, that’s worth more than any subscriber milestone.
“You don’t need a huge audience. Again, you just need a loyal, engaged audience to make money.”
