No Time for YouTube? 8 Ways to Grow Your Channel When You’re Busy

No Time for YouTube? 8 Ways to Grow Your Channel When You’re Busy

One of the most common reasons I hear from women who want to start a YouTube channel is that they simply don’t have enough time.

I understand it. I’m a mom of three and a business owner, and I’ve spent years working with women who are balancing careers, businesses, kids, relationships, households, and about a hundred other responsibilities while trying to build their YouTube channels.

YouTube does require time. I’m never going to be the person who tells you that you can build a thriving channel in two hours a week without making any sacrifices.

But I also believe that if growing a YouTube channel is genuinely important to you, there are ways to make it fit into a busy life. The key isn’t necessarily finding huge blocks of free time. It’s becoming much more strategic about how you use the time you have.

Here are eight ways I recommend approaching YouTube when time is one of your biggest obstacles

1. Change the Way You Think About YouTube

Before worrying about your filming schedule or editing workflow, I want you to get your expectations right.

YouTube is a long-form, long-game platform. You’re probably not going to publish five videos, immediately go viral, and suddenly have a successful business. There’s a learning curve involving filming, editing, titles, thumbnails, topics, analytics, and understanding your audience.

That’s why I like to think of the beginning of your YouTube journey as an internship.

Your job during that period isn’t to be perfect. It’s to learn.

Every video gives you another opportunity to get more comfortable on camera, understand your audience, improve your packaging, and become a better creator. If you’re spending hours trying to make every video a masterpiece because you’re terrified of looking like a beginner, you’re wasting valuable time.

Being a little cringe in the beginning is practically a YouTube rite of passage. Stop trying to skip it.

2. Know How You Eventually Want to Make Money

If you’re already short on time, you need to make sure the work you’re doing today is building toward something valuable tomorrow.

That’s why I encourage creators to think about monetization early, even if they aren’t making money yet.

I teach four primary ways to make money through YouTube: your own products and services, AdSense, affiliate marketing, and brand deals or collaborations.

Your strategy may look completely different depending on which of those you’re pursuing. A business owner using YouTube to generate leads doesn’t necessarily need the same audience or content strategy as a lifestyle creator hoping to make significant income through affiliates.

You don’t need to monetize immediately, but you should know what you’re building toward. That clarity prevents you from spending months creating content that doesn’t support your eventual business goals.

3. Create a YouTube Schedule You Can Actually Maintain

Consistency matters, particularly when you’re still learning what works for your channel.

The more you create, the faster you improve. You collect more data, become more comfortable filming, learn which topics resonate, and give YouTube more information about your content and audience.

For creators who are serious about gaining traction, I generally like to see a consistent long-form publishing schedule rather than disappearing for months while working on one “perfect” video.

That doesn’t mean everyone needs to upload at exactly the same frequency. Your schedule has to be realistic for your life and the type of content you create.

But at some point, you have to decide whether YouTube is actually a priority. If it is, put it on your schedule like one.

4. Choose a Niche You Actually Want to Make Time For

Your YouTube niche has a surprisingly large impact on your time.

I’ve worked with people who have plenty of available hours but still can’t get themselves to film because their channel feels heavy. They’re no longer excited by their topics, they’ve become disconnected from their niche, and every video feels like another chore.

I’ve also worked with incredibly busy women who somehow find little pockets of time to create because they’re genuinely excited about their channels.

That’s why alignment matters.

If you’re passionate about your niche, video ideas come more naturally. You look forward to filming. You find yourself thinking about your channel when you’re driving or walking around the grocery store.

If you’re constantly procrastinating, don’t automatically assume you’re lazy or bad at time management. Ask whether you’re still excited about what you’re creating.

5. Know Exactly Who You’re Creating For

Knowing your target viewer saves an incredible amount of time because it eliminates so much second-guessing.

When you deeply understand your audience—not just their age or gender, but what they’re thinking, worrying about, searching for, and trying to accomplish—coming up with YouTube video ideas becomes much easier.

One exercise I use is what I call the Bird Call Method. Think of every video as a bird call designed to attract your specific “bird,” or true fan.

Start by asking three questions: What are the biggest questions my audience has about this topic? What misconceptions do they believe? What mistakes are they making?

Those questions alone can generate dozens of useful video ideas.

Instead of sitting down every week thinking, “What am I going to film?” you’re building a bank of topics specifically designed to attract the people you want watching your channel.

6. Reduce the Friction Around Filming

For a lot of women, filming is where the entire YouTube process grinds to a halt.

You need to do your hair and makeup. Set up the lights. Find the camera. Make sure the house is quiet. Get the kids occupied. Fix whatever piece of technology has mysteriously decided not to work today.

Suddenly you’ve spent an hour preparing before you’ve recorded a single sentence.

Figure out what creates the most friction for you, and then find a way to remove as much of it as possible.

Maybe you need a permanent filming setup instead of rebuilding it every time. Maybe you need simpler equipment. Maybe you film while the kids are at school or wake up before everyone else. Maybe certain videos can be recorded in your car or while you’re traveling.

And maybe you need to lower the bar occasionally. You don’t need perfect hair, professional makeup, and a studio-quality set for every single video.

Make the best content you can with the time you have, publish it, and move on.

7. Plan Before You Hit Record

A little planning can save you an enormous amount of time later.

I don’t necessarily mean writing an elaborate word-for-word script. Even a strong outline can make filming significantly faster because you already know what you want to say and where the video is going.

AI tools can also help you organize your thinking. I personally love being able to talk through an idea and use AI to help organize those thoughts into an outline. I’m still bringing my ideas, opinions, experience, and expertise to the video—the tool is simply helping me organize them faster.

Planning can also make your editing, title, and thumbnail process easier because you’ve thought about the video’s core idea before filming.

Ten or twenty minutes of intentional preparation can save you hours of trying to figure everything out later.

8. Buy Back Your Time When You Can

Finally, if you have the financial ability to outsource something, consider doing it.

Time is a resource.

You may eventually reach a point where spending five hours editing a video yourself no longer makes sense when you could hire an editor and use those five hours to run your business, work with clients, film another video, or spend time with your family.

The same applies to thumbnail design, strategy, coaching, or other parts of the process where someone else’s expertise could save you months of trial and error.

You absolutely do not need a team to start a YouTube channel. But as your channel or business grows, don’t assume you need to continue doing every single thing yourself.

The goal is to protect your time for the things that actually require you.

You Probably Have More Time for YouTube Than You Think

If you’ve been saying, “I want to start YouTube, but I don’t have time,” I want you to look at the problem a little differently.

Instead of asking where you’re supposed to magically find another eight hours in your week, ask how you can make YouTube easier to execute.

Can you simplify your filming setup? Plan your videos in advance? Stop trying to make everything perfect? Create a bank of ideas so you’re never starting from scratch? Outsource something? Find small pockets of time that you’re currently overlooking?

Most importantly, make sure you’re building a channel you’re actually excited about.

YouTube requires work, patience, and consistency. There’s no hack around that.

But when you have the right niche, the right audience, a clear monetization goal, and systems that reduce the amount of friction involved, finding time to create becomes a whole lot easier.
