Becca Watson is a Scottish wellness/lifestyle content creator based in London. She started out on YouTube doing singing covers, and with a lot of free time on her hands during the Covid pandemic, she was able to experiment and fell into the lifestyle niche. She loves making productivity and routine videos, and recently hit a milestone of 100,000 subscribers, making life as a full-time YouTuber a reality. In 2022 she was nominated for the Scottish Influencer Awards.

Becca has been on YouTube for 3 years now, and she started her channel right after she graduated from University with a music degree. She didn’t know what she wanted to do with her degree (I’m sure a lot of us can relate), and though she always was a big fan of YouTube, she never really thought about doing it herself. She started using it to upload videos of her singing covers, but then started experimenting with lifestyle content, since she was an avid consumer of that kind of content herself. She went through several different niches as she tried to find her footing on YouTube and figure out what her audience wanted from her. She tried to find something that was trendy, but also sustainable in the long run, and that’s when she honed in on wellness and lifestyle videos by posting a morning routine video that seemed to really resonate with her audience. More importantly, it was through this experimentation where she discovered a new love: video editing.

Video editing

Becca’s videos have a beautiful, cinematic quality to them, and she’s entirely self-taught! While she had experience in music production, she was a complete newbie to the world of editing visuals. She learned mostly through trial-and-error, from watching other creators, and watching tutorials on YouTube, and she is still learning every day. You can learn anything online! She started with iMovie until her editing skills outgrew it, and then moved on to Final Cut Pro about 6 months in. When she first started her channel, she was uploading 3x a week just to get as much content out there as possible, but now she focuses more on quality, rather than quantity by uploading consistently once a week, and has found that posting higher quality videos less often has had a positive impact on her channel. But the initial grind of 3 videos a week helped her with her editing skills and gave her the practice she needed to be able to produce the quality she has today.

Becca takes a day to film, and about a day and a half to edit, give or take, depending on the style of video. She prefers to edit the entire thing in one sitting, which can take 10+ hours in one day.

“One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned with editing is that less is more.”

Quitting her job for YouTube

Becca had landed a job she loved as a social media manager a year ago, and she actually got the job because of her experience with YouTube. Leaving a job she enjoyed was difficult for her, but her channel had become its own full-time job in the last few months. She’s been blessed to work with some great brands, and she has a wonderful manager that is consistently sending her work week after week. It got to a point where she wasn’t able to do her day job and her YouTube channel to their potential, and she had no work-life balance. There was a lot of pressure, and she realized that something had to go before she was completely burned out. While it was a hard decision, she felt like it was the right one for her.

Her fiance is her biggest cheerleader. He has always supported her passion and her vision, and I can’t underestimate the importance of having a support system and having people in your corner as a content creator!

Keeping content fresh

So how does a wellness and lifestyle creator keep their content new and fresh, especially when the morning and evening routines don’t change much? Becca has found that seasonal routines tend to perform well, as well as routine videos posted in the beginning of the year when people tend to be searching for them the most. Her creative challenge is how she can make a video different from the one she did 3 months before. She tries to keep her editing style fresh while also staying on brand.

Final Thoughts

Becca’s passion for content creation is evident, and drives home the point that you have to love what you’re doing. You have to love creating content. Sure, you can make money from it, and it can be a job, but it’s never going to be if you don’t have love and passion for it. You have to love YouTube, not only as a creator but also as a consumer. Find what makes you different. Put yourself in the shoes of your audience. Why do they watch you? Why do they come back week after week to watch your videos? Whether it’s the value you bring, or your editing style, or how people make you feel, you have to connect with what makes people want to watch your content. If you’re going through periods where you’re churning content out just to do it, you’re going to fall out of love with it, and it’s not going to work in the long run. Find whatever you love, and stay focused on that.

“Find what makes you different.”
