Want to learn about massively growing your YouTube beauty channel? Let’s move from working with brands to being a brand, with beauty and makeup YouTuber Lisa J Makeup on today’s episode! She went from casual hobbyist to successful Youtuber with 147k subscribers to socially conscious business maven, and you have a front-row seat to all the scoop.
Lisa started YouTube when she was 8 months pregnant with her second daughter 5 years ago; she was a makeup artist, had been for 12 years now, but she was now at home and was looking for something to stretch her creative muscles. So she started making videos as a hobby. 3 years in, she now had 2 daughters, was back at work and had no more room for YouTube in her hectic life, so she took a few months off. But during that time she kept getting caring messages from her subscribers. That encouraged her to make a comeback and show up consistently, and she grew steadily as a result. A year later she launched a video that was a hit! It blew up her subscriber numbers from 60k to 140k! What a jump!
“I want a community that enjoys my personality. I’m not trying to be something not authentic just to gain a lot of subscribers really fast.” – Lisa J Makeup
Lisa’s audience is made up of women of all ages, but she gets a lot of engagement from ladies in their 40s and older. She helps them be empowered to experiment and create their own makeup looks by teaching them the basics and the makeup and beauty concepts. Now she also has a beauty product line of brushes and makeup, and you’re going to hear the story of her journey on this episode, how to identify and narrow down what makes you special, how she created and built her beauty makeup brand from the ground up, and so much more. Enjoy!
“AdSense is great. Working with brands is great. But having something of your own is even better.” – Erika Vieira
4 Key Interview Takeaways
- Zone in on what makes you different. Lisa attributes narrowing down to focus on her superpower (of knowing the right makeup for people of any age) to be why her channel went from dying to consistently thriving. I think a part of you comes alive when you’re in flow, doing what you’re both great at and love so much. Focus on uncovering what that is and you won’t have much resistance when it comes to showing up or creating content.
- When NOT to follow a trend. Don’t follow a trend of you’re only doing it for the benefit of riding the wave and picking up views. If it doesn’t fit with you or your content, it doesn’t belong on your channel, and your audience’s experience should always come first.
- Check-in on your analytics. It’s surprising to me how many YouTubers, successful ones, go with an intuitive approach towards making videos. As a creator, your intuition plays a big part in what becomes a hit and what doesn’t. But that doesn’t mean you should ignore your analytics. You’ll get to see quantifiable evidence of what has been working, where you’re getting viewers from and see how things you maybe never considered are contributing to your growth. Give it a shot.
- Connect with a bigger mission. Lisa’s question about the lessons she wants to teach her daughters about beauty and the lives they’ll go on to navigate in this less kind internet bullying world led her to create her makeup brand. That bigger mission drove her to connect with the charities she chose and helped her products get sold out in 5 weeks. Don’t underestimate your power, and don’t underestimate the power of a big mission. You’ll be surprised by the people who will rally to support and help make your dream a reality.
