The Simple Cheat Code that Grew Cleaning YouTuber to 2.1 million subscribers: Melissa Maker

“I know what I’m good at and I know what I’m not good at, and I’m humble enough to know when I can’t do it all.”

Melissa Maker is an accidental cleaning expert – because she hates to clean! In 2006, she launched Clean My Space, a cleaning service in her hometown of Toronto, Canada. In 2011, she decided to create digital content to help drive bookings by launching the Clean My Space YouTube channel. Since then, the channel has amassed over 310 million video views and over 2.1 million subscribers along with a healthy Instagram following and busy website. She also founded a microfiber cleaning tools company in 2016, called Maker’s Clean.

While Melissa has delivered her expert advice on cleaning products, tools, and DIY substitutes for over ten years, she wasn’t always a cleaning pro and understands that people are looking for practical, time-saving solutions to everyday problems. Melissa’s fans tune in on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram to get the latest advice on their cleaning needs and follow Melissa’s life as an entrepreneur, foodie and mother.

In this episode, Melissa discusses her journey as a content creator and entrepreneur, sharing insights on balancing creativity with business operations, finding inspiration for content, understanding YouTube analytics, managing a busy work week, transitioning control in her businesses, and her experience with authorship.

She emphasizes the importance of collaboration, analytics, and hiring the right people to foster a successful work environment, and of community building through YouTube.

Like me, Melissa has a passion for long-form content, and we talk about the deeper purpose behind her cleaning content, highlighting the significance of wellness in cleaning and the impact of her work on people’s lives.

“I go to sleep at night knowing that I help millions of people and that feels really good.”
