We’re giving you more ways to find awesome video ideas than you can handle! If you’ve ever wondered how to create videos people will want to watch, then wonder no more, because sustainable fashion YouTuber Alyssa Beltempo is here! She’s a scrappy, up and coming YouTuber who’s built her channel up to almost 80k subscribers with a few viral hits along the way. She’s talking all about how she picks video topics that eventually go viral and how to film your videos on the cheap!

Alyssa was blogging about fashion and doing wardrobe styling for years before joining YouTube. But 2 years ago she wanted to get off the fast fashion roller coaster and switch to slow fashion and sustainable style because it’s better for the world. So she started her channel. Things started slow and gradual but then she had her first viral video. About 9 months into her channel, she threw up a video about wearing a shirt dress in 20 different ways and it blew up. It affirmed for her that consistency – posting a new video every Sunday – wins in the end, and sticking to her niche of slow fashion is her path to gaining traction. She now has 77k subscribers and a few viral videos under her belt to talk about!

“Even if I only have 1 person watching, maybe they’ll consider shopping less. Ultimately that’s what it’s all about.” – Alyssa Beltempo

She started YouTube with a mission to help people shop less and adopt sustainable fashion so at the start her view count wasn’t a huge priority for her. Now she’s seeing her channel as a way to impact more lives with her message. She didn’t start off super polished, her first videos were filmed with an iPhone and an old camera, but it’s been great to see her improve her setup and roll out new video ideas over her YouTube career. In today’s episode, we’re going to be breaking down a number of her viral videos and how she comes up with the ideas for the topics and film concepts for her videos, how to succeed with super minimal filming set up, working with ethical brands for sponsored videos, and so much more. Enjoy!

“The comment section is a treasure trove of information” – Erika Vieira

4 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. A new way to look at Consistency. We’ve talked a lot about consistency here, but one thing Alyssa mentioned that is great for you to take away is consistency allows you to workshop your material. She was passionate about her niche, but that didn’t mean anyone else was even interested. Showing up consistently allowed her to gain verification, from her viewer count and subscriber count that kept going up, that people were really interested in what she was doing. So there you go, another angle to look at consistency if you aren’t already convinced.
  2. Pay attention to your analytics. Alyssa and I spoke back and forth about analytics and Click-Through Rates for her videos and thumbnails. Watching your analytics is a good way to see how well a thing is working. In this case, Alyssa was getting around 5% CTR for her videos, so there’s room for her to tweak and grow to hit around 8-10 to even 15% CTR as some of my students do. It’s just a matter of making tweaks and looking at your analytics to see if there was an improvement or decline.
  3. Upgrade with milestones. Not necessarily a path I would recommend, but the path that Alyssa took was to time the upgrades of her gear with specific milestones she hit. Her first videos were done super low-tech, an iPhone and an old Canon T3i. And as she’s gone on she’s upgraded slowly. She is still using iMovie for editing, she doesn’t use lighting nor a microphone – which is a testament to how awesome her content is to stand out without all that stuff. The part that I suggest you take away from this is don’t wait for everything to be perfectly in place. If you have a message on your heart and you’re driven to create video content, do it. Imperfect action will beat perfect preparation all day.
  4. Use the comment section gold mine. Alyssa is brilliant. She figured out that larger YouTubers probably don’t have the time nor invest the time to dig through their own comments, so she uses them as a way to get content ideas for her videos. It works because those are real people in your niche asking for something specific that you can provide. Make a video and provide it and like magic, you’ll get a ton of views because you’re giving people what they want!

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS

Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.

Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!

Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!

THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT

After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!

  • 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
  • Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
  • Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
  • Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
  • Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
  • Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
  • Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
