Serein Wu is a beauty content creator based in Los Angeles who started her YouTube channel at the end of 2013. She has over 4 million views on YouTube and 74,000 subscribers. Serein is very active, uploading to her channel five days a week. Plus, she just launched the Behind the Beauty Podcast focusing on what happens behind-the-scenes in the beauty and fashion industry! Serein was a top ten finalist in the 2014 Allure Beauty Blogger Awards.

The beauty community can be an excellent motivator. Serein was struggling with depression when she discovered the online beauty community. First, trying out the products she was hearing about gave her a reason to get out of bed. Once she began posting herself, the dialogue with followers gave her something to look forward to.
Take advantage of contests in order to gain exposure and make connections with PR firms as well as other influencers. The Allure Beauty Blogger Awards helped Serein build a network within the beauty community, and while she may not have gained a significant number of new followers, the contest did give her access to PR contacts who invited her to try products.
Shout-outs from popular influencers can boost your growth. When Kathleen Lights mentioned Serein’s channel at the end of a favorites video, her subscriber count went from 10,000 to 25,000 in the time it took to fly to Europe!
Hard work and consistent content creation get you noticed. Serein’s second significant jump in numbers came when Tati Westbrook of GlamLifeGuru decided to celebrate reaching 1 million followers by giving back to a YouTuber who worked hard and deserved to be noticed. Serein won the giveaway and had the opportunity to appear with Tati on Style Code Live. In addition, their collaboration on a favorites video (which Tati didn’t post on her own site, but instead directed followers to Serein’s channel) boosted her traffic from 44,000 to 70,000 subscribers.
Dealing with negative comments can be a struggle. Serein suggests resisting the urge to write back and stepping away. It’s okay to feel hurt, but it is important to manage that hurt and get over it as quickly as possible. A support system of family and friends (and chips!) can help you talk through it and move forward.
Do your research (YouTube is a great resource) before you spend a lot of money on equipment. Serein recommends the Canon DSLR camera with continuous autofocus, and the use of natural light whenever possible. (A reflector is an affordable way to bounce natural light as needed.)
Invest in quality software. If you are certain you want to pursue content creation, Serein advises upgrading your hard drive and processor and utilizing Final Cut Pro.
