We’ve been getting a lot of requests for this one! And this week’s guest definitely delivered, because this is part one of a two-part conversation. We had such a good time and went so in-depth, I wasn’t even focused on the time. YouTuber Natalia Taylor gives us the tea on her entire YouTube career and the secret to building a fiercely loyal audience, how to make a YouTube comeback and double your subscribers in the process, and so much more!

Natalia has been on YouTube for almost 5 years now. In that time she’s shared deeply personal stories and pop culture with her audience in very entertaining and authentic ways. When she started she was studying to become a doctor but dropped out of college to pursue modeling. She wanted to use YouTube as an outlet and personal diary to talk about her behind-the-scenes experiences being a model. She saw success fast, one of her first 5 videos she posted went viral and put her on the map. But the story she told about getting kidnapped when she was 7 years old, made her career and was the catalyst that shot her channel up to 700k subscribers!

“You’ll eventually realize that there is more to life than just followers.”

At almost the height of her career, when she had 730k subscribers, she disappeared. And it was going to be permanent. She quit YouTube, went back to a regular job and a simpler life which she enjoyed. But something was pulling her back, and with the encouragement of her friends and family, after a year had gone by, she came back and took her channel in a new direction. It was tough reviving her channel and she lost a ton of subscribers, but she came back in fine style and now has almost 1.8 million subscribers! In this episode, Natalia talks about her early viral hits and how they affected her and her YouTube career, how she got selected to be a member of the Tana Mongeau collaboration channel, Trash, and her experience going through that, why she left YouTube and how she made her comeback and doubled her subscribers, and more. Enjoy!

“I’m constantly growing and changing and that includes my perspective on situations in the past.”

3 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. As you grow and change, so does your channel. Natalia isn’t afraid to take down her old videos. Especially those that are no longer in line with her values and ideals. She’s deleted two videos which essentially built her career because they were no longer congruent with who she was. It’s important to be self-aware and have the integrity to know that if something isn’t you anymore, you’ll step up and make changes, despite the benefits and continuous growth you’re getting from that thing.
  2. Rise to the challenge. Natalia is very competitive. When she went up for the collab channel she went against her friend and thousands of other YouTubers, but she didn’t back down. She didn’t eliminate herself from the competition because she didn’t know as much about Tana as the other contestants. She wanted to win and she went for it. And she won. You’re going to go up for opportunities, whether it’s a rare spot to work with a brand, a collaboration or, you never know, to get your own TV show. You’ll need to find your competitive spirit and dive in for the thing you want!
  3. Stay grounded. Natalia talks about the euphoria and feeling of invincibility she felt when she became YouTube famous. All of a sudden virtually overnight people were treating her differently online and in real life because she now had a huge following. The limelight casts a big shadow and she went down a very dark path because she wasn’t properly equipped to handle it. Many young YouTubers aren’t. But eventually, she realized that she needed to get grounded, heal, separate herself from the otherworldly YouTuber life and remember that there’s more to life than her following. Never lose track of who you are and where you’re coming from as you climb on YouTube.

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS

Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.

Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!

Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!

THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT

After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!

  • 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
  • Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
  • Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
  • Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
  • Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
  • Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
  • Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
