Instagram Vs. YouTube: What should you focus on? with LoveSweatFitness Katie and Ryan Dunlop: Beauty and the Vlog Podcast 107

“You have to have an element of free content.”

Are you looking to embark on your very own journey to becoming a beauty, lifestyle, or health and fitness influencer? Most, if not all, influencers out there can be found on multiple social media platforms, the most popular of which are YouTube and Instagram. However, if you’re someone who’s just starting out, which social media platform should you get on first? Should you consider getting on both, or is it better to stick to just one? Instagram vs. YouTube – which one should you focus on more? Is it worthwhile to even compare the two? Our guests in today’s episode may just have the answer for you.

Katie Dunlop of Orange County, CA is the creator of LoveSweatFitness, a women’s health and fitness community focused on making fun and effective workouts accessible to everyone. After going through her own 45-pound weight loss journey, Katie has created a wonderful and motivating community, reaching more than half a million women through her social media pages and Hot Body Guides.

“Find a big topic and then create your own space inside that.”

She first started Instagramming in 2014 to share more workouts and more inspirations to her students on the days when she wasn’t teaching her fitness classes. A year later, together with her husband Ryan, they started the LoveSweatFitness channel on YouTube and have since grown their following to more than 200k subscribers. Listen to their story and be inspired!

“If you’re determined and you’re focused, you can get pretty good pretty fast.”

8 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. When it comes to growing your following, the issue is not so much Instagram vs. YouTube but getting your stuff shared. According to Ryan, for anyone looking to get exposure on Instagram and grow their following, the key is getting your stuff shared. He says, “Pages that are already out there that exist that have great followings, them sharing you is so essential.”
  2. Have a specific target audience. Who are the people you want following you? If you don’t reach the audience you want, you won’t be able to accomplish the goals you’ve set. For LoveSweatFitness, which primarily targets a female following, Katie says, “At the end of the day, our one and only goal is to help inspire women to live healthy, balanced lives and to help them do that through the workouts and nutrition.”
  3. Get connected to a media outlet. Getting featured in media outlets can be a game-changer. When PopSugar did a full story on Katie’s transformation and what LoveSweatFitness was all about, the write-up got shared tens of thousands of times and garnered a ton of attention.
  4. Speaking of Instagram vs. YouTube, there’s discoverability that’s built into YouTube that’s just not there with Instagram. Even old videos in YouTube can still get so much traction and hits whereas old Instagram posts just get buried.
  5. You don’t have to have amazing, crazy equipment to start. It’s about constantly developing your skills, and your audience will appreciate and respect you for it.
  6. Listen to your audience. When you make videos that cater to what your audience is asking for, they can go off the charts. Sometimes this may require you to step outside of your comfort zone, but you have to be willing to do so.
  7. Do a yearly check-in or a check-in every six months and look at your entire channel. See which videos did really well and which didn’t. If the videos that you like to make don’t align with your audience and there’s a disconnect, you have to do something to bridge that gap.
  8. Find a big topic and then create your own space inside that. Create your own unique version of popular videos with your niche or audience in mind.
