Inside the YouTube Strategy That Grew FayeFilms to 1.6 Million Subscribers
“Act as if you’ve already reached your goal. Half of success is confidence, because confidence gives you the courage to keep improving.”
When people imagine what it takes to build a successful YouTube channel, they usually picture someone going all in—quitting school, leaving their job, and dedicating every waking hour to content creation.
Faye did the opposite.
While earning one of the most demanding science degrees you can pursue, she quietly built a YouTube channel that now has more than 1.6 million subscribers, all while supporting herself through university and creating some of the most cinematic productivity videos on the platform.
What makes her story so compelling isn’t just the numbers. It’s the way she thinks about YouTube, creativity, and building a sustainable brand.
Great YouTube Videos Are Built One Improvement at a Time
Faye didn’t start with expensive equipment or formal filmmaking training. In fact, she taught herself everything. One piece of advice she heard early on completely changed how she approached YouTube: instead of trying to make every video perfect, improve just one thing with every upload. That mindset became the foundation of her entire career.
Six years later, she still approaches every video asking the same question: What’s the one thing I can make better this time?
It’s a refreshing reminder that successful YouTube creators aren’t born with incredible editing skills or cinematic vision. They develop those skills through thousands of tiny improvements over time.
Passion Started the Channel. Research Helped It Grow.
Before Faye ever picked up a camera, she spent months studying YouTube itself. She became fascinated by the algorithm and obsessed over understanding why certain creators exploded while others plateaued. During the pandemic, she spent eight to ten hours a day analyzing successful channels, looking for patterns most people overlooked. She noticed that viewers often arrived for helpful information, but they stayed because they felt connected to the creator. That insight shaped her entire content strategy.
Instead of creating study videos that simply taught information, she blended productivity with lifestyle, allowing viewers to learn while also getting to know her as a person. It’s one of the biggest reasons her audience has continued growing for more than six years.
Why Personality Matters More Than Information
Study tips are everywhere. Productivity advice is everywhere. What isn’t everywhere is your personality.
Faye realized early that information alone has a shelf life. Personality doesn’t. Her cinematic vlogs, behind-the-scenes moments, and everyday experiences aren’t separate from her educational content—they’re what make the educational content memorable. Her audience isn’t simply returning for another productivity tip. They’re coming back because they feel like they’re following a friend who’s navigating life alongside them.
That’s exactly why she’s been able to transition naturally from student content into broader lifestyle topics as her audience grows up with her.
Her Shorts Strategy Is Completely Different
One of the biggest takeaways from this interview was how intentionally Faye approaches YouTube Shorts. She doesn’t recycle clips from her long-form videos, she creates completely original Shorts that are designed specifically for the Shorts feed while still connecting back to a larger long-form video.
For every long-form upload, she’ll often produce two or three standalone Shorts that either expand on one point, preview the full video, or explore a related topic that sparks curiosity. Those Shorts introduce new viewers to her content, while the long-form videos deepen the relationship. It’s a simple but incredibly effective content funnel. Instead of treating Shorts as an afterthought, she treats them as their own creative format.
Planning Is Her Secret Weapon
Watching Faye’s videos, it’s easy to assume they must take forever to film. Surprisingly, filming is often the easiest part. The real work happens beforehand. She spends days—or sometimes weeks—planning every shot, every transition, every script, and every angle before filming begins.
That preparation allows production days to move quickly because every decision has already been made. Great content rarely feels spontaneous. It usually feels effortless because so much thought happened before the camera was ever turned on.
YouTube Paid for Her Education
One of the most emotional parts of our conversation came when Faye shared something she’d never publicly talked about before. Her family originally couldn’t afford to send her overseas for university. When YouTube started generating income, she convinced her parents to use the savings they had for one year of school, promising she’d figure out the rest herself.
She did.
YouTube became the reason she was able to continue her education in Australia. For years, every upload wasn’t just another video. It represented tuition, rent, and the opportunity to continue pursuing the future she wanted. That perspective completely changes the way you think about consistency.
Long-Form Content Builds Community. Shorts Build Discovery.
Many creators ask whether they should focus on Shorts or long-form content. Faye doesn’t see them as competing formats, she sees them as serving completely different purposes. Her Shorts consistently bring new people into her world. Her long-form videos are where those viewers become loyal subscribers.
Brands have even told her that her long-form audience is unusually engaged because viewers spend so much time with her. Instead of chasing whichever format is trending, she’s built a content strategy where each format strengthens the other.
Success Didn’t Come From One Viral Video
Perhaps the most surprising part of Faye’s story is that she never had the kind of overnight viral moment many creators dream about. Her channel grew steadily, video after video, tear after year. She simply refused to stop improving, and that’s an encouraging reminder for anyone feeling discouraged by slow growth. You don’t need one massive breakthrough. Sometimes the most successful YouTube careers are built through consistent improvements, thoughtful strategy, and showing up long after most people would have quit.
“Shorts bring new eyes, but long-form is where people become subscribers.”
