Looking for some clarity around how to build a successful channel while balancing a full-time job? Want to go from a channel that’s confusing and flat to one that’s vibrant and engaging? It’s time for another bootcamper success story! With a few viral hits under her belt and some massive growth, our guest fashion YouTuber Rachel from The Rachel Review is here to share her journey before and after the boot camp, and what she’s doing to be on track for 100k subscribers this year!

Rachel is passionate about being an entrepreneur and running her own business, but her early journeys into it ended in failure. After she closed up shop on her online business, she started working for a wastewater management company so she could gain a mentor and hopefully learn enough to take another shot at entrepreneurship. During that time, her boyfriend pushed her to start her YouTube channel and share her passion for fashion. And she did, but it barely got off the ground with only 250 subscribers. She was growing slowly and getting discouraged until she found out about our Zero to Influence bootcamp. Now she’s at 38k subscribers and confidently on her way to close out the year at 100k.

“No one is going to like everything you have to say. People all have different experiences.”

Learning how to find her why and getting clear on what she’s good at were two of the most impactful things the boot camp helped her with. They opened her eyes to what she should really be doing on YouTube. If you’ve been thinking about getting started and telling yourself that success is unattainable and you can’t be the next YouTube star, she’s here to tell you that she was right where you are, and she did it. And if she can do it, you can too. Her message for you is, “You have to risk it to get the biscuit!”

“Every video you put out and comment you get, you’re getting an understanding of what your community wants and needs from you.” – Erika

5 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. You need to understand your why. This was the biggest thing for Rachel that sparked the transformation and explosion of her channel. Listen, your YouTube channel is an extension of you and your purpose on this earth. Your channel is your self-expression and your life’s work, so it’s crucial to dig deep and find out why are you building the channel. If its something fickle like fame or money, you won’t last long. Why are you helping people with your videos? What does it mean to you deep down?
  2. YouTube is a long-term commitment. Our bootcamp teaches you how to grow your channel and monetize, but it’s definitely not a get-rich-quick scheme. Building something of lasting value like your YouTube channel takes time. You should have that long-term view before you start.
  3. Only listen to the people in your tribe. Negative comments can tear you down. Especially when we’re programmed to focus on the small negative ones over all the positives that happen to us. Rachel combats that by being very clear on who her tribe is and ignoring everyone else. The people in her tribe appreciate her worth and want her to improve. They love her content and want her to grow. So she takes negative comments from her tribe as constructive feedback. But if the negative comments are from people not in your tribe, trash them. They have nothing to do with you.
  4. Fight self-doubt the second it pops up. Self-doubt robs you of your opportunity to help people and robs people of their opportunity to learn and resonate with you. Whenever it shows up, instantly fight it. Remind yourself of why you started your channel in the first place, remember all the people who’ve reached out and left positive comments. Tell yourself, “I can handle this,” even if you have no idea if you can. Because the world needs you to be confident and show up!
  5. Manage your expectations of success. When Rachel started to see some YouTube success, she reached out to me for advice. She was dreaming of that moment when she would walk into her boss’s office and hand in her resignation letter, then book her flights for vacations all over the world. But it didn’t quite happen like that, not even a little bit. My advice to her was to keep doing what she is doing and do more of it if she can. Don’t expect that everything will change overnight. Success comes slowly and builds over time, so it’s important to check your expectations before you get disappointed.
