This is it!  On this episode, Emily Noel shares her wisdom by answering questions raised by the community. She covers everything from her recording schedule and structure, her business behind the scenes and her passion for makeup and beauty products!

This is part 2 of the interview with Emily Noel. Tons of amazing takeaways were uncovered in Part 1 – make sure to check it out here.

When Emily started on YouTube in 2007, she was doing it for fun and to blow off steam after her days being a news anchor at the local ABC affiliate. But after seeing the impact she was having on her viewers, her explosive growth and the opening of YouTube’s partnership program, she went full time into YouTube in December 2012.

“Don’t feel pressured to turn everybody into a lover of you, because you’re just not going to be everyone’s cup of tea.”

Emily Noel’s passion for sharing makeup tips and reviews has led her to now be on YouTube for over 10 years! Her videos have amassed more than 170 million views and she has 960 thousand subscribers to her channel, Beauty Broadcast. She consistently releases 4 videos a week, one being a vlog where she shares her mommy life with her husband and 2 daughters in Illinois.

“People need to sometimes step off from the numbers… and think about how they feel about what they’re putting out there.”

8 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. Stay on top of the latest trends. If you put yourself in front of the fishing hole, and you’ll catch a lot of fish. That’s the benefit of being on top of new trends. When you create content around something new and trending, you can create a steady stream of viewers for your channel. Connect with the trends that inspire you, because as you know, being authentic is key.
  2. Innovate, Innovate, Innovate. Spend the time to think about your content and create something people haven’t seen from you before. Present your content in new and interesting ways. If you’re not growing, your channel is slowly dying. So, if you want to be a 10+ year YouTube vet like Emily Noel, think about reinventing yourself or refreshing your content style every once in a while.
  3. Don’t be hard on yourself. Things are going to get screwed up. You’re going to reach a point where you can’t cross everything off your todo list and you’ll feel down. Your expectations will not align with reality, your delicate balance will get turned upside down and you’ll have bad days. That’s a part of the process – don’t be too hard on yourself. You can’t create great things in a depression spiral.
  4. Don’t burn yourself out. We get burnt out when we try to do too much too soon, and when we set insanely high expectations of ourselves. Avoid that by setting a realistic and flexible schedule for yourself. Also, roll with the punches. If you planned to record 4 videos every day but missed a day, forgive yourself and make it up on the next day.
  5. You are the customer. We often forget that WE are a part of our target market and that our likes and dislikes are a great resource for what might be a hit or a miss on YouTube. Pay attention to what interests you and inspires you – especially pay attention to what part of your own content bore you. If you don’t feel good about it, it’s very likely your viewers won’t like it.
  6. Let your audience get to know you. Emily Noel recently started to share more parts of life through a vlog on her channel. That was because she saw immense value in having her audience see her and know her beyond her beauty and makeup videos. Being vulnerable and authentic draws people closer to you, and helps create more raving fans and supporters. Wrap yourself in courage, lower your shield and try being open with your viewers, you’ll be surprised with the results.
  7. Negative comments come with the territory. It’s totally normal to get a few negative comments. Some may even be downright toxic. None of that is on you or your problem. Emily Noel says that’s one of her lowest points of being on YouTube for as long as she has. But it still hasn’t stopped her from making great videos. Don’t give your emotional energy to those who will drain it.
  8. Don’t chase the numbers, exercise gratitude. We often look at someone with a million followers and think to ourselves “It would be amazing to hit that level”. But we forget to be grateful for the followers we have. The fact that 50, 1000 or 20000 people choose to watch our content is phenomenal. Never stop pushing for growth, but also spend time being grateful and letting your subscribers know how grateful you are to have them.
