Affiliate Marketing for YouTube Creators: How to Choose the Right Platform

If you create content around fashion, beauty, lifestyle, shopping, or product recommendations, affiliate marketing can be one of the most lucrative ways to monetize your YouTube channel.

Some of the highest-earning creators I’ve worked with generate an enormous percentage of their income through affiliates. I’ve seen creators build seven-figure businesses with audiences well under half a million subscribers because they’ve learned how to create content that naturally helps people decide what to buy.

It’s one of the reasons I always say that if I weren’t in the YouTube education space, I would seriously consider starting some kind of shopping channel. The monetization potential is incredible.

But once creators decide they want to make money with affiliate marketing, another question usually follows: Which affiliate platform should I use?

How Does Affiliate Marketing Work on YouTube?

Affiliate marketing allows you to earn a commission when someone purchases a product through your unique affiliate link.

For YouTube creators, this can be particularly powerful because your videos have a much longer lifespan than content on many other social platforms. Someone can discover a product review, shopping video, tutorial, or recommendation months—or even years—after you publish it and still make a purchase.

You also don’t necessarily need an enormous channel to start.

I’ve worked with creators who began seeing affiliate revenue within the first several months of launching their channels. Like everything on YouTube, it takes time to build the audience and content library that creates meaningful income, but you don’t need hundreds of thousands of subscribers before you begin thinking about affiliates.

In fact, I think it’s smart to establish your affiliate strategy early.

ShopMy, LTK, MagicLinks, and Other Affiliate Platforms

For creators in fashion, beauty, and lifestyle, three of the best-known affiliate platforms are ShopMy, LTK, and MagicLinks. There are other options as well, and individual retailers may have their own affiliate programs.

Each platform gives creators a way to recommend products and earn commissions when viewers purchase through their links, but the experience, retailer availability, creator tools, and additional opportunities can vary. You also don’t necessarily have to choose only one.

Some retailers aren’t available through every affiliate network, which means creators may use several platforms depending on the products they regularly recommend. Amazon, for example, has its own affiliate ecosystem, while creators may also have ways to incorporate Amazon recommendations through other platforms.

The goal isn’t to sign up for every affiliate program you can find. It’s to build a system that makes recommending and linking products as easy as possible for both you and your audience.

Why I Like ShopMy for YouTube Creators

Among the creators and students I work with, I’ve seen a lot of interest in ShopMy, particularly from people who previously relied more heavily on LTK. I’ve personally used both, and I eventually moved from LTK to ShopMy because I found ShopMy easy to use and a good fit for the way I recommend products.

That doesn’t automatically make it the best choice for every creator. LTK has a substantial ecosystem of its own, and different platforms will make sense for different businesses.

This is another area where I don’t want you choosing something simply because another influencer told you to. Look at which retailers you need access to, how easy the platform is for you to manage, and how well it fits the way your audience actually shops.

Affiliate Platforms Can Lead to Brand Deals Too

One benefit of affiliate networks that creators sometimes overlook is the potential connection to brands. Affiliate performance gives brands actual data about your ability to sell. If you’re consistently driving purchases for a particular company, that brand may recognize that your audience responds to your recommendations and become interested in developing a more formal partnership.

I’ve seen clients receive brand opportunities through these affiliate relationships, and it makes sense. A creator who can demonstrate that she moves product can be incredibly valuable to a brand.

This is also why I don’t want creators to become overly focused on subscriber count. A smaller creator with an engaged audience that trusts her recommendations may be far more valuable commercially than a much larger creator whose audience rarely buys.

Don’t Overlook YouTube Shopping

If product recommendations are a meaningful part of your channel, YouTube Shopping is another monetization opportunity worth paying attention to.

What makes YouTube Shopping particularly interesting is that the shopping experience is integrated directly into YouTube rather than relying entirely on viewers leaving the platform to find products through links elsewhere. That reduces friction for your audience, and anytime you can make it easier for someone to find the exact product you’re discussing, that’s worth exploring.

YouTube has continued investing in shopping tools for creators, so if you’re eligible for the shopping features available to your channel, I would absolutely investigate how they fit into your overall affiliate strategy.

I wouldn’t necessarily abandon your other affiliate platforms, either. YouTube Shopping can be one piece of a larger monetization ecosystem.

The Right Content Matters More Than the Affiliate Platform

There’s something even more important than whether you choose ShopMy, LTK, MagicLinks, YouTube Shopping, or another affiliate program: your content. Signing up for an affiliate platform doesn’t create affiliate income. Creating videos that attract people who want product recommendations does.

Think about the types of videos people watch before making purchases: comparisons, reviews, favorites, tutorials, shopping guides, what-to-buy videos, what-not-to-buy videos, hauls, before-and-afters, and videos that solve a specific problem with a product. Those are incredibly valuable viewers because they’re often watching with intent.

There’s a huge difference between attracting someone who casually likes fashion and attracting someone actively searching for the best jeans for her body shape, the best foundation for mature skin, or the best luggage for an upcoming trip. The closer your content gets to that buying decision, the more powerful affiliate marketing can become.

You Don’t Need a Massive YouTube Channel to Make Money

This is probably the biggest thing I want creators to understand about affiliate marketing.

You don’t need a million subscribers.

You don’t even necessarily need hundreds of thousands.

You need the right audience, strong content, and trust.

If people consistently come to your channel because they value your taste, expertise, reviews, or recommendations, you’ve created something incredibly valuable. Your YouTube channel isn’t simply generating views anymore; it’s influencing purchasing decisions.

That’s why shopping content can be such a powerful YouTube niche and why I encourage creators who naturally talk about products to start thinking about affiliate monetization early.

Choose the affiliate platforms that make sense for your content, make it easy for your viewers to find the products you’re recommending, and focus most of your energy on becoming someone your audience genuinely trusts. Because ultimately, the platform isn’t what makes affiliate marketing profitable.
