Why Hitting 100K on YouTube Didn’t Feel the Way She Expected
“I looked at my phone and I had hit 100,000… and I felt no different.”
When creators tell me, “I just want to hit 100K subscribers,” I think about Caitlin.
Because she did… but it didn’t feel the way she thought it would.
Caitlin had been on YouTube for over a decade. She built her channel through multiple pivots—starting with beauty, then moving into luxury fashion, then personal content, and eventually landing in commentary. And that last pivot worked fast.
She went from 50,000 to 100,000 subscribers in about a year. Her views skyrocketed. Her AdSense income exploded. On paper, it looked like everything was finally clicking. But internally, something felt off. That’s the part no one talks about.
When success doesn’t feel aligned
Caitlin had built momentum in the commentary space—talking about influencers, social media culture, and the comparison trap. The content performed, but it required her to constantly consume the very thing she was trying to critique: endless scrolling, negativity, and commentary on other people’s lives.
And over time, it started to wear on her. Even as the numbers grew, the alignment shrank. She described it as this constant internal tension—like she was “clawing” her way to a milestone she thought would fix everything.
The moment that changed everything
When Caitlin finally hit 100,000 subscribers, she didn’t celebrate. She didn’t feel proud. She didn’t even open her YouTube plaque for four months.
That realization is huge, because it forces a question most creators avoid: are you building something you actually want—or just chasing what you think success is supposed to look like?
The hardest (and most important) decision
Even after hitting her goal, Caitlin knew something had to change. But pivoting again meant:
- Losing views
- Losing subscribers
- Letting go of what was “working”
And that’s where most creators get stuck. Because walking away from momentum feels terrifying.
But staying in misalignment is worse.
So she made the call. She pivoted away from commentary entirely. And yes—her views dropped. Her subscribers dipped. The algorithm stopped rewarding her the same way.
But something else happened too. She felt lighter. Happier.
What this really teaches us about YouTube
Caitlin’s story is one I come back to over and over again with my clients, because it highlights something most people don’t realize: you can grow fast on YouTube… and still build the wrong thing.
And if you don’t pay attention, you’ll wake up one day with:
- The subscribers
- The views
- The validation
…but none of the alignment.
That’s why I always say: growth without alignment is just a faster path to burnout.
Caitlin didn’t fail, she figured it out. And now, she’s building something more intentional—something that actually feels good to create, even if it grows slower.
