From Ministry to Midlife Fashion Creator: How Kay Harms Built “Dressed for My Day” at 56

“I just really believe in seasons of life. I’m really proof that you can do one thing for so many years, and then you can pivot and do something completely different.”

When I sat down with Kay Harms, I knew this conversation would inspire so many women who wonder if it’s too late to start something new. Kay is the creator behind Dressed for My Day, a YouTube channel and blog that helps women over 50 feel confident, stylish, and current—without losing sight of faith and purpose.

What I love about Kay’s story is that she started her blog at 54 years old, after two decades in ministry and raising her kids. With a background in journalism, she knew how to communicate, research, and write—but she had zero experience in fashion or YouTube. Still, she went all in, posting six times a week on her blog and later expanding into video.

“So many women in their 50s and beyond just kind of stop. They stop getting dressed, they stop putting on any makeup, stop doing their hair… and I just felt like it’s really important to encourage women to keep putting in the effort and keep showing up.”

Turning Faith Into a Foundation for Business

Kay shared that every morning, she prays for her work and her audience—a practice that keeps her grounded in service. She sees her YouTube channel not just as a business, but as a ministry to encourage women to show up, get dressed, and keep investing in themselves.

That mindset of serving first has guided her through sponsorships, collaborations, and brand deals. Kay’s philosophy? “If I’m asking people to click, subscribe, or shop, I have to offer them something valuable in return.”

Smart Growth: Collaborations, Consistency, and Serving Her Niche

When Kay started her YouTube channel in early 2020—right as the pandemic hit—she already had a loyal blog audience and an email list of over 20,000 subscribers. That strong foundation helped her grow quickly, especially after one key collaboration with another creator doubled her subscribers from 18K to over 40K.

She’s also mastered the business side: leveraging ShopMy over LTK for higher affiliate commissions, using timestamps and YouTube links to drive sales, and keeping her email list engaged with style boards, printable resources, and seasonal fashion tips.

Style That Serves

What I find so refreshing about Kay is her realness. She’s not chasing trends—she’s helping women build timeless wardrobes through slow fashion, capsule pieces, and confidence. Her audience comes for the outfits, but they stay for the encouragement.

Kay reminds all of us that it’s never too late to pivot, learn something new, or step into a new season. Whether you’re 25 or 65, you can still create something meaningful, serve your audience, and build a business you love.

“I have to continuously think serve my viewer, serve my reader, not just make money and not just put on a show or get a lot of views. I have to think about serving them.”
