Comparisonitis, fear of missing out (FOMO), burnout, guilt, trolls in your comments section, negative validation and imposter syndrome are all issues we have to come across as people in the YouTube space. And it can be hard to deal with. We want to show up for our audience but with that comes so much baggage: when we show up, how did we perform compared to other people in our industry? We want to be up on every trend so we aren’t left behind, but rushing and posting non-stop is leaving us burnt out. And when we do post, the negative comments that come in always tear us down, even when they’re in a stream of positive comments. And finally, who are you to be making videos about this topic? What are your qualifications? We’re putting those fears and feelings to rest with these 9 steps in today’s episode.
“Ultimately, most people want to make a change and have a positive impact.”

6 Key Interview Takeaways
- Reconnect with why you started on YouTube. I’ve said this a thousand times because it is so critical to your success. Everything starts with why, and if yours isn’t strong enough you can’t hope to weather the storms of YouTube. What is the higher purpose that compelled you to start building your channel? Tap into that and remind yourself of that every day, whether you’re having a blast or pulling yourself out of negativity quicksand.
- Foster a community. Be deliberate about who you’re creating content for. You want to build a community of people who are super supportive, caring and sharing with you and with each other. Your community doesn’t only have to be made up of your audience, but you need a community of friends or peers on YouTube who you can vent to when you’re feeling down. When you do that, you’re able to open up to people who get you because they’re on a similar journey.
- Unlink your self-worth to your channel. It can be dangerous to tie those two together because success on youtube can define your whole identity. Life is full of highs and lows and if your identity is tied to the ups and downs of YouTube, it will be tough to recover from those low points. To overcome this, build a life outside of YouTube. Find friends, spend time around family, invest in hobbies and let those ways and others feed your self-worth outside of YouTube.
- Don’t compare your journey to someone else’s. Give yourself some grace and some gratitude for what you’ve accomplished. Remember there are others who’ve been unable to reach the level of success you’re currently at. Remember that you’re on your own journey and it doesn’t have to look even remotely similar to other peoples’. Plus, there’s a lot more for you to accomplish on the platform and you haven’t begun to scratch the surface of your potential, so lean into that. If you refocus on your strengths and lean into that, you’ll be pleasantly surprised that you have no time or need to take your eye off the road you’re driving on and you reach each milestone on your journey with a lot more excitement and joy.
- Don’t focus on the numbers, focus on impact. Listen for the heartfelt comments from those people you’ve touched. Screenshot those DMs, print them out and put them in a folder or up on your wall and fill yourself with the positivity of those you’ve impacted. Thinking about the numbers all the time will only drive you crazy and into a downward spiral.
- Don’t feed the trolls. You have to protect and guard your mental health and the trolls are only there to hurt you and your self-confidence. So build up a strong mindset that says that their input does not matter and their negativity has nothing to do with you. You can also not see those comments altogether by outsourcing the moderation of your comments section. Hire a VA or use a tool like TubeBuddy to help you manage those comments.
