Jamila Musayeva is a UK-certified etiquette coach and an author of well-known and popular etiquette books. Her interest in etiquette, manners and how they impact our social and professional lives began during her own academic career and beyond and has evolved to become a lifelong mission. Currently, she works as a sought-after “good manners” coach, both online and in person. She helps people from all walks of life from around the world to master these critical soft skills that they can use in personal and business interactions. These skills were honed and perfected during her own studies and professional career, and Jamila is committed to offering soft skills training that allows her clients to reach their social and professional goals.

Jamila’s YouTube growth is nothing short of phenomenal. She was already producing video for her online classes during the pandemic, and that’s how she started using YouTube. She had one video go viral and that helped the entire channel take off.

Her niche is pretty unique: she teaches etiquette and self development! When she got onto YouTube, she noticed that educational channels tend to be run by men, whereas lifestyle and fashion channels are run by women. Jamila tries to combine it all into one channel: education, lifestyle, etiquette, and personal development. She has meshed education with lifestyle, and she actually has a lot of male subscribers who learn a lot from her channel, however, they do say that they wish there was a male YouTuber who created the kind of content that Jamila makes, but more geared toward men.

Why English?

Jamila speaks 7 languages: Azerbaijani, Turkish, Russian, English, French, Spanish, a little bit of German, and she’s learning Arabic! There’s no end to learning a new language: it’s an ongoing process! She studied internationally, which definitely helped the acquisition of language… She did her Masters in French, and her undergrad in English. So why English for her channel if she can speak so many other languages? She For Jamila, having done so much of her education from childhood to adulthood in English, English is the language of education for her. Since she has been educated in English, now she is teaching in English, and because her channel is in English, she has a much broader audience because of how much English is spoken globally.

Jamila’s YouTube career is fascinating to me. Even at nearly 700k subscribers, YouTube is still her side hustle! Her main job is as an educator and author. She only publishes 2 videos per month, and her motto is quality over quantity. Her YouTube has also helped her business and helped give more exposure to her brand. Her first viral video was so early in her channel, which is incredibly rare for YouTube. It brought a lot of attention to her channel.

“You have to follow your instincts and your intuition when you’re doing something from your heart.”

Creating Content From the Heart

Jamila creates content from her heart. She even noticed that the videos she does from her heart that get the most views. The ones that people ask for or request don’t do as well. Regardless, she always tries to listen to feedback and she reads all the comments.

Many people think that content creation is easy, but it’s not! Jamila has a lot of self-awareness. When she feels like she needs to force herself to shoot a video to stay on schedule, the viewers can tell that she’s not at her best. She started promising herself that she would only shoot when she felt energetic, so that her energy can transfer to the viewer. You can’t fool your viewers. They can tell when you’re not into what you’re doing. Nobody wants to watch someone who is dreading what they’re doing. Her trick? Batch recording. On those days when she’s feeling energetic, she films a few videos at a time. She is often exhausted by the end of the day but it’s beneficial to film when she’s feeling energized so that her viewers can see that.

Having Multiple Streams of Revenue

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. You don’t own YouTube or other platforms and you have no control over the money you make from it. Have multiple streams of income and don’t only rely on a social media platform, because anything can happen at any time. Jamila uses Russian creators as a prime example of this.

For Jamila, Youtube is really a platform that speaks to her heart, and she believes you should stick to one platform. She tried to do TikTok and it really hasn’t gone anywhere because she’s not investing much into it, and she prefers long-form content to short-form, so YouTube is where she will stay. She’s been watching YouTube for how to clean, how to do makeup, etc. for years, and not only does she feel comfortable with Youtube, that’s also where her ideal audience is. Stick to one platform that feels genuine to you, and once you’re successful, be sure to diversify your income streams.

“Youtube is such an amazing platform that allows content creators to build their brands out of just videos.”

Quality Over Quantity

Since Jamila only uploads two videos a month, she is a strong believer in quality over quantity. So what does she mean by quality? The most important thing is sound, then visuals, and then the value that you bring. She puts a lot of work into her outfit, her background, having fresh flowers, etc. You can upload every day and it doesn’t mean you’ll increase your view or subscriber count. Aim for quality, especially now that the YouTube algorithm favors good quality videos.

Jamila also has a videographer. She iInvested in having one early on and it paid off. Since she already had an established business, she was able to allocate those funds. For her videographer, it’s his side hustle too. But had her channel not taken off, she probably would have quit because it would have no longer been cost-effective.

What if you’re not great with technology, but you can’t afford a videographer because you’re just starting off? Jamila’s suggestion is to barter. Offer for them to shoot you, you do the content, and split it once you get monetized. There are so many freelancers now willing to collaborate.

Final Thoughts

As a creator, resist the urge to create something just because it’s popular or because everyone else is doing it. Do it from your heart, emphasize quality over quantity, and do what you feel in the moment is something you really want to share with the world.

As far as protecting your mental health, Jamila has had her fair share of people saying nasty things. She just deletes and hides comments and then blocks them from the channel. Just like you would walk away from someone in person who is saying something nasty to you, metaphorically walk away from them online. Jamila’s superpower is her authenticity in who she is as a person and the message she’s carrying.

Despite being an etiquette channel, she doesn’t endorse a specific vision of elegance. Take it from Jamila: elegance comes from within. Elegance is not just about how you look. It’s how you feel and how you carry yourself.

“Do what you feel in the moment is something you want to share with the world.”

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS

Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.

Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!

Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!

THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT

After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!

  • 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
  • Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
  • Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
  • Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
  • Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
  • Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
  • Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
