Are you stuck in YouTube burnout hell or want to know the best ways to avoid it? In this episode, Beauty YouTuber Sari Reanna joins us and shares the details of her YouTube career and how she navigated burnout and came out on top!

Sari is a 23-year-old full-time YouTuber who created a name for herself on YouTube by sharing her struggles with severe acne. She lives in Edmonton, Canada with her family and she’s grown her channel to over 125k subscribers and 15.2 million total video views! She was bored working at a makeup counter and not being able to share her passion for makeup with her co-workers, so she decided to start a channel. From there, she fell in love with the beauty community. That was in 2014.

“I am honestly living proof that anyone can start editing and start making YouTube videos.”

It wasn’t until January 2015 that she really got serious and her posting frequency went way up. The video that put her on the map was a rant she did about her time working at Sephora towards the end of 2015. That video alone, over the next few weeks, skyrocketed her channel by almost a million views and tens of thousands of subscribers!

“People will come for your content, but ultimately, they’re gonna end up staying for you.”

After consistently posting 3 videos a week since January 2015, she noticed a disturbance in her energy. She was no longer making videos for the right reasons. Instead of the joy of sharing her experience and helping others, she was chasing numbers and statistics. So she took 5 weeks off YouTube to reconnect with herself. In this episode, Sari shares what led up to that and how else she handled her burnout to come back stronger.

“I needed to take a step back and remember why I love making videos and refuel my passion for it.”

6 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. You don’t need the best equipment, but you do need good equipment. The type of channel you have and the type of content you’re creating will often dictate the type of camera and equipment you’ll need. For Sari, doing makeup tutorials, she didn’t need an overly complicated setup. Since she usually does face-to-camera, she’s able to make do with a Canon Rebel T3i. Her videos still look amazing and she’s able to provide great value to her audience. Get good equipment, but don’t overthink so much that you don’t get started. You can grow into more expensive and complex setups as you get bigger.
  2. People want your perspective. The internet and, more specifically, YouTube, has brought the whole world closer together, and people are craving new experiences now more than ever. Don’t underestimate the power of your perspective: where you live and how you see the world. One of Sari’s videos – a rant about her ex-job at Sephora – single-handedly gave her close to a million views and over 20k subscribers…. that’s massive! Sari shared insights that viewers in the beauty niche wanted to see and she delivered it well. So get up and start being yourself more on camera!
  3. Post as frequently as you can. It’s important to know yourself here. Think about what else you have on your plate and how much time you can actually dedicate to making, editing and posting great videos. You don’t want to lock yourself into a schedule you can’t keep up with. Sari was able to consistently post 3 videos a week, but she didn’t have a full-time job and it wasn’t a huge burden. She saw the explosive growth that the frequency and consistency gave, but you might not have all those same things line up for you. Know yourself.
  4. Make content that’s authentic. Sari experienced YouTube burnout and chose to take 5 weeks off to reconnect with her reason for starting on YouTube in the first place. She had gotten too caught up in the numbers and making content that beats the algorithm that she lost sight of herself. That’s the valuable lesson here: never lose sight of who you are or why you’re doing this. It’s easy to get off course when you’re growing and successful and your audience loves what you’re putting out. But stay connected with your core and constantly challenge yourself to ensure that your content is still a reflection of you and your values.
  5. Don’t rely on YouTube to boost your videos. YouTube is constantly changing and there have been multiple issues and glitches with getting videos out, even to audiences who have already subscribed. Don’t rely solely on YouTube to share your videos with your audience. Use other social media platforms, add cards and end of video sequences to get people to consume your other content. Pro tip: get your subscribers onto an email list where you can send a note directly to them when new content has been launched. The benefit is that you own that platform and it’s not changing or glitching any time soon.
  6. Pay attention to what’s popular. You might find a trend you can make a video about or inspiration on an approach. And pay attention to trends on a broad scale too, It doesn’t have to be in your niche. You might a video getting a lot of traction and the way it was done could inspire your approach in your next video. Or there may be a trend in another niche which you can apply to your own, for example, using the rising popularity of Fortnite to make game character makeup tutorials. Always keep your ear to the ground for what’s new and trending.
