“This [demonetization] is not going to be forever on YouTube.”

10 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. How do people make money through YouTube Adsense? YouTube content creators are able to monetize the ads that run on their YouTube videos by making a fraction of a penny per view. They also have the option to place multiple ads and choose exactly where they want them to be in the video. The more ads you decide to put on, the more money you’ll make.
  2. What is the YouTube Adpocalypse and how did YouTube demonetization come about? In March 2017, advertisers started pulling out their ads because they realized they were being shown on content they didn’t want to endorse, such as extremist videos and videos containing hate speech. As a result, YouTube started a new review system that went live in August 2017. Currently, when you upload a YouTube video, it can get flagged for demonetization, where you will see a green dollar sign that’ll switch into a yellow dollar sign, which means that YouTube isn’t sure whether your video is appropriate for all audiences.
  3. What should you do if you get a yellow symbol? You can submit your video for remonetization by requesting a review from a human to see whether your content is appropriate or not.
  4. How long does it take to have a human review your video? It can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days to never.
  5. Is there a way to figure out on your own why YouTube demonetizes your video? There was a theory about these “secret codes” that you could look for in your HTML that would tell you why your video is being demonetized, but YouTube has now done away with that. At this point, Jen thinks YouTube wants to hide from creators why their video is being demonetized because they don’t want people manipulating the system.
  6. What triggers that yellow symbol to come up when you upload a video? Using certain words in your title, in your description, or in your tag can trigger the yellow symbol to come up. Jen finds that the words “unboxing” and “drugstore” (because of the word “drug”) seem to trigger it every single time.
  7. Is this demonetization on YouTube going to be forever? Jen doesn’t think so. She thinks it’s just a temporary thing, something that YouTube is working through, trying to figure out what their advertisers want and trying to get them to come back.
  8. What can you do to deal with the YouTube Adpocalypse? Jen shares that the best way to deal with it is to make your video go live as soon as you upload it, which enables you to monetize for at least a few hours before it gets flagged.
  9. How does the demonetization work when it comes to live streaming? It’s the same thing. As soon as it renders into YouTube and people come watch the replay, it starts the clock and eventually gets flagged.
  10. What are some of the solutions to the YouTube Adpocalypse? Jen says that if you want to make money off what you’re doing on YouTube, the best way is through affiliate links. Affiliate links are actually a way for you to make a significant amount of money and cost your subscribers absolutely nothing. You can also consider doing sponsored videos and even think about having an online shop that has to do with your channel and creating an email list.
