Why Sarah Therese Left The YouTube Beauty Community (and Grew To Nearly 1 Million Subscribers After): The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 206

“I’d rather make videos I’m hugely passionate about for 10k people than ones I’m not for 200k people.”

Are you ready to take the first step to explode your YouTube channel and step into YOUR role as a YouTube influencer? With just ONE HOUR of your time, you can watch my FREE Road to 100k Masterclass and gain the confidence and clarity you need to go from zero to 100k+ subscribers on YouTube!

Authenticity is everything today. When we follow the path that lights us up, we’ll find success, no matter what. Our guest this week took that inspiration to a whole other level. She trashed over 200 videos and totally changed her niche, but instead of fading away to obscurity, she soared to almost 1 million subscribers! Lifestyle YouTuber Sarah Therese shares her story, process, and philosophy, plus all her video secrets!

Sarah is a mom of three who has been on YouTube since she was a teenager. She used it as a way to find her own creative outlet away from her 2 siblings. In 2017 a conversation with a friend showed her that she could stay home with her kids and be creative and earn a decent income. So she dove into YouTube more seriously. She started in the beauty niche and racked up over 200k subscribers, and went full-time on YouTube. But over time life got more hectic and she grew away from beauty. So she changed the entire focus of her channel to health and beauty, and her subscribers came along for the ride! Since then she’s grown to almost 1 million subscribers and has several million views on her videos, all while running her one-woman show and homeschooling three kids!

“People actually come back to my channel for me and just the things I have to say.”

Sarah has a refreshing approach to YouTube that I think has made her impervious to the algorithms. When she switched niches entirely AND deleted hundreds of high performing videos, she gained subscribers, raving fans, brand deals, and revenue. It’s all because she’s passionate about her craft. She only focuses on improving for the next video, and she doesn’t stop to look at what others are doing. She doesn’t lead her life by what keywords are on-trend, she makes what she’s driven to make, no matter the performance. That’s worked out for her so far. You’re going to learn more about her philosophy, how she picks content ideas, her journey through changing niches and so much more. Enjoy!

“There are too many people who sit on their past videos. Come up with new content more often.”

4 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. Follow where your passion leads. This is a key idea that has defined Sarah’s career. She was passionate about makeup and youtube as a teen, so she started making videos for fun. The passion also helps her decide what videos to make, and how to film and edit them. And we can see the effect that has had on her channel, her happiness and her income. So when passion comes knocking, open up and let it in.
  2. If it’s not working for you, change it. When her life changed and she wasn’t doing as many beauty videos, instead of beating herself over it or quitting as so many people do, she adjusted her videos to fit her life. She switched to health and lifestyle and that became an even bigger deal for her channel than her beauty videos. To the point where she could delete all her beauty videos and still see a skyrocket of growth. Don’t sit in a bad situation when you have the power to change it. There’s a great chance that when you do the thing that’s aligned, the world will see that it fits better because you’re in your element, and you’ll be rewarded.
  3. Focus on the present. Don’t live on your past videos. What’s common are people who reused the same themed video because it worked so well in the past. It’s not a bad practice to do more of what’s worked, but Sarah is not about that life. Her advice is to stop living in the past. Who cares if that kind of video worked in the past? Not your audience, they don’t need another one of your haul videos, they want to see what new ground you can break or what new thing you can create for them.
  4. Show the vulnerable parts. People want to see the honest, raw truth, more than anything these days. There’s a huge market for it, so start filling that need and watch your channel grow. If there’s something that you need to say, or a story from your life that you know will inspire someone, share it. Share with authenticity, don’t try to be overly polished and it will connect with the people that it’s meant to.

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS

Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.

Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!

Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!

THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT

After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!

  • 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
  • Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
  • Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
  • Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
  • Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
  • Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
  • Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
