While some YouTube videos go viral and catapult their creators to instant popularity, it takes more than a viral video to call yourself a success. So, what does it really take to succeed on YouTube? With a plethora of videos coming from YouTube content creators all over the world, how can you gain audience loyalty and support?
Find out the answers to these questions from 23-year-old beauty expert, Alexandra, as she shares her YouTube journey and tips for how to succeed on YouTube. She started her YouTube career right out of high school at age 18, and her channel, AlexandrasGirlyTalk, has been a tribute to her younger, more awkward self who had a budding curiosity for all things girly.
“There’s so much negativity that can happen by being on YouTube, but there’s also a lot of good.”
She used to get made fun of for being and looking different so, she started experimenting with her looks. This led her to realize that she’s not the only girl who wants to know how to take care of her looks and how to take control of her beauty so, she started making videos. Now, Alexandra currently has 1.9 million subscribers and 222 million video views.
“If you really believe in what you’re saying, you definitely want people to see what you have to say.”
How has Alexandra managed to succeed on YouTube?
Well, Alexandra says that first, you need to figure out what makes you unique. You have something valuable about you that you can share with people. Once you’ve found a way to communicate that in your videos, you’ll have taken the first step on the path to success.
“It becomes a monster of a thing that’s so beautiful but also so ugly when you don’t stay true to what you want.”
8 Key Interview Takeaways
- What are some important things to consider when making a video? Have empathy for your audience and think about what they really want to see. Make your videos in such a way that you don’t waste anyone’s time. You want your audience to like you enough to subscribe to your channel.
- How do you manage the need to do things that are trending so your videos are seen on YouTube, yet still stay authentic to yourself and your why? One of the keys for you to succeed on YouTube is balance. Try to do videos of things that are really relevant while staying true to your personal brand. You can take into consideration suggestions from your management, but more importantly, listen to your audience because they are the people who are watching your videos.
- What are the kinds of videos you would probably regret doing? These are the videos that have nothing to do with your why. For Alexandra, if her motive behind filming a video has nothing to do with helping people and are only about getting more popular, it just doesn’t feel good. These types of videos end up in her trash and never get on to her YouTube channel.
- How important is it to stay true to your why? Once you succeed on YouTube, take care not to get lost in the flood of expectations and in what’s trending. Don’t forget why you started your channel in the first place. Otherwise, you will just lose yourself and find no personal fulfillment in what you do.
- How can you grab people’s attention? According to Alexandra, it’s a whole other creative aspect to the video-making process. As a creator, you now have to not only think about the actual video that you’re filming, but also think about how you’re going to package it.
- Should you put effort into marketing? It’s a choice for you to make if you really want to succeed on YouTube, but it definitely takes time and it’s a whole other job from just making videos. The way things are going for content creators is you have to have a team. Alexandra shares, “It’s so important to educate yourself on the actual algorithm and the database and figuring out how you can get seen.”
- Is a YouTube channel something you can do with your friends? Definitely! Alexandra suggests building your little crew into an empire. If you’re already spending so much time together anyway, why not turn it into a business? She says girls are so powerful and have so much to offer that if we just look at the ways that we can minimize the amount of effort we put in and maximize the results, we can definitely build something people will respond to.
- How can you get the loyalty and support of your audience? You can’t succeed on YouTube unless you get people’s support and loyalty by bringing them enough value, making them care enough about you, and showing you care about them. That’s when they’ll start investing the time and the energy to support you and your channel.
