If you’ve ever struggled with self-confidence and doubt, then you NEED to listen to this episode! Today’s guest is fellow podcaster and entrepreneur, beauty and lifestyle YouTuber and Blogger and Author. The Skinny Confidential’s Lauryn Evarts Bosstick has built her empire by following her heart and her passions and she shares a ton of tips to help you do the same!
The Skinny Confidential was started by Lauryn when she was a freshman in college in 2010. At the time, she looked at the internet and saw whitespace where a haven and resource tailored to women could exist, and she jumped in and made it herself. She didn’t make a dime for the first 3 years, but fast forward to now: she has a hugely successful blog, a podcast with her husband, affiliate and brand deals and multiple businesses to help women.
“With action comes clarity. You never truly know until you do something.” – Erika Vieira
Lauryn is working to create something much bigger than herself and she wants the brands she’s created like The Skinny Confidential to represent that. She’s brought her husband, her sister and several employees and freelancers slowly into the business to help it grow even further. You’re going to learn a lot about her mindset towards overwhelm and the unique way she views her audience that makes her so successful.
“Instead of looking at how I can get more followers, I always concentrate on the followers I have.”
6 Key Interview Takeaways
- Speak to only one person. You might’ve already heard of the term “avatar” depending on how long you’ve been building your brand online. The idea is to identify one person, and that perfect person is a representative of who you want sitting in your audience and becoming your customers. When you’re clear on their demographics, likes and dislikes and problems, then with your content and products speak to them, and only them. That guarantees you get more people like them being attracted to you and your brand. This is a crucial step so don’t overlook it.
- Have a long-term vision. What is your vision for starting your YouTube channel? What do you want to be able to do or be able to have? Having that long-term vision helps you to get through the hard work that comes up day-to-day. It also helps you to make better decisions since your vision is your north star that you’re always adjusting your journey against. See how important it is?
- Look at your followers as influencers. I LOVE this philosophy from Lauryn. Each person who watches your videos is an influencer. They have friends, family and coworkers who they can influence to check out your videos or buy your stuff. So don’t only look at the aggregate numbers, look past those to see each digit is a person, with an entire network of their own, and they deserve your attention, love and respect. Cater to their needs and you’ll do well.
- YouTube is NOT over-saturated. If you haven’t started your channel yet, it’s not too late. We haven’t even scratched the surface of what the internet is capable of or what people are willing to consume. Remember, just like for every other successful YouTuber out there, people wanted their perspective, and they’ll want yours too. Just get started.
- Develop your intuition. This one comes with experience and taking a ton of action constantly. Developing your intuition makes decision-making way easier. You’ll be more attuned to know if a deal doesn’t feel right and you’ll get a feeling that you’re on the right path with your content or business ideas. Go out there and take a bunch of action, listen for that voice inside – that gut feeling and keep honing it.
- Hire help. Don’t think you can do everything yourself. You can’t. When you’re starting out its okay, but as you go on, it’ll become a handicap. If your strategy is to do everything yourself now, look around and realize how much slower you’re going, or how much faster you could be going by taking things off your plate and giving it to people who can do a much better or faster job. Think of the relief you’ll have when you’re no longer focusing on the mundane and un-exciting parts of your to-do list and instead fully immersing yourself in the aspects you love and are good at. You can get all that and more by hiring people to help you.
