Why October is the BEST time for YouTube Beauty and the 3 Things You MUST Do This Month

Why October is the BEST time for YouTube Beauty and the 3 Things You MUST Do This Month: Beauty and the Vlog Podcast 64

Pumpkin spice lattes, fall makeup and Halloween tutorials all mark the start of the autumn season . . .if you ask a beauty YouTuber. According to Google Trends, October has the honor of being the month with the most makeup related searches all year. Primarily fueled by Halloween, this month is a prime opportunity to expand your channel and take advantage of the increased search traffic. In addition to Halloween and fall makeup looks, makeup brands begin releasing their sought after holiday gift sets in mid-September, so there is a LOT to talk about this month! By adding strategy to your video content, you can ensure that you take advantage of this high traffic time of year to grow your channel and gain more subscribers and views.
So, what EXACTLY should you do? Keep reading or listen to the podcast episode to learn the three tips to make the most out of this month. You can click on the pink bar above or listen on iTunes or Stitcher.

1.) Pay Attention to trends

Pay attention to trends in October and year round. Check out this awesome infographic by Google that highlights the most searched makeup/skincare trends throughout the year. Did you know that searches for dry skin peak in January and prom is the second highest search volume season? The graph is a few years old, but the seasons and trends remain the same. Refer back to it monthly or whenever you need inspiration for new video topics. Make a point to make a video for each trend listed. You can also familiarize yourself with the Google Keyword Tool (which I explain in detail in this video tutorial) and discover the best keywords and phrases for your particular video topic. The premise is basic supply/demand. Discover what people are searching for (using Google trends and keyword planner) and create content for those searches.  In my interview a few weeks back with Cassie Thrift Thick and others on the podcast series, she attributed a lot of her recent success on creating videos on trending makeup topics.

2.) Add Something Unique

One of the best ways to separate yourself form the pack is to add a unique spin to popular videos or trends. Think about what makes you unique and what you can bring to the table that hasn’t been  done before. Don’t try to be something you are not. IF you suck at special effect makeup, don’t spend 15 hours trying to create a FX video for a Halloween look. Think about what you are interested in and naturally good at. Think of costume/maakeup up ideas that have not been done before or add your own twist to a classic. Maybe you don’t like the dark, gory makeup but love the pretty, sexy makeup looks during Halloween.  Maybe you are an amazing seamstress and can put together awesome costumes or maybe you have access to all the new makeup releases because you work at a department store or Sephora. Maybe you have children and you want to make videos on kids costumes. Or maybe you decorate beautifully and have an awesome Halloween setup at home. Or, Maybe you look like a particular celebrity, historical figure, etc. try making a Halloween tutorial that compliments your look. The list goes on ..  you get the idea.   It might be against your core niche, but as I’ve said before, your niche is a guideline that can be flexible. Every so often it pays to venture out and attempt something different,  you never know what’s going to stick.

3.) Upload more videos

Many beauty creatives take advantage of all this high traffic season and choose to  increase the videos they churn out during the month of October. RawBeautyKristiKait Nichole and Alex Faction are examples of creators who have committed themselves and their viewers to videos everyday in October. Now, you don’t have to go THAT far, BUT if you have the time, money, and stamina, you will find it to be a worthwhile investment in your time. The key is to create videos that people are searching for. Think of movies, tv shows and other types of costumes that are popular this year. Or, you can do simple how-to videos related to Halloween or fall. Maybe you don’t upload every single day in October, but you could commit to one extra video a week. Also, don’t feel like you have to do Haslloween related tutorials, as mentioned above, October is great time to talk about some of the new makeup holiday releases, chat about fall theme or come up with beautiful fall makeup looks.
Now, take action! Put together a video calendar for the month of October and start churning out those videos! Leave a comment below, what types of videos do you plan on doing in October?
