How Miro Influencers Can Work With Top Brands

What inspired you to start your YouTube channel?

I watched YouTube beauty videos for a year before I started. At the time, I had a boyfriend in the restaurant industry and I was really bored. I hesitated. Watching the beauty videos, I thought, I have a different way of teaching things. I taught myself how to do makeup, I didn’t get professional help. My mom didn’t even want me doing makeup. I thought, I can teach and I can teach from the students perspective then I made my very first video and people started watching.

Why makeup?

I studied accounting in school, I have been very obsessed with makeup. It was probably that forbidden apple appeal because in my culture you didn’t wear makeup until you were older. My mother said I couldn’t touch it and so of course, whatever it is that you can’t touch, thats what you want to play with.

What were you doing while also filming for your channel?

I was a manager and managing executive office suites and left that career and went on to work for a huge global consulting firm and that’s the job that I just left in April.

When you launched your channel, what was your goal?

My only goal was, and I have this written on top of a notepad and I saved  it to this day, was how can I help people. I wanted women to feel capable because I didn’t know how to do makeup and I had to teach myself and I thought, I could help them. That’s when I started jotting down notes for my very first video. This is something to do in my free time, I love getting the feedback, I love other people that are obsessed with makeup and that was it. At the time, things weren’t really the way they were in the YouTube space. You didn’t know to look for opportunities because they didn’t exist.

Beauty Bonus Round:

What are your three holy grail items?

  1. Beauty Blender
  2. Anastasia Dipbrow pomade, I’m a new fan and it’s amazing
  3. $3 Mascara called Jordana Extreme Volumizing mascara from Walgreens

What is your best tip for someone just starting out on YouTube?

Do what I’m not doing, be consistent. Don’t disappear. Out of sight out of mind when it comes to YouTube because it’s so oversaturated, there is so much content people need to see you.

Who are your Beauty YouTube inspirations?

I have so many friends that I have made from doing this. I don’t know if I can think of one person. Rose, love her. Karissa. Makeupbyalli. Emily Noel.

What do you wish you knew when you first started your channel?

The negativity that comes along with it. Unless you are a celebrity you are never prepared. There is no preparation for the comments and unnecessary hate that you get. In the beginning it was difficult. If I could tell myself, I would say, don’t worry about it, its not that big of a deal. And I also wish that I had started earlier and didn’t hesitate for so long. If you want to start a channel, just do it, don’t think about it.

What is your favorite social media platform.

Twitter. Last night was a perfect example. American Horror story was on and I like to live tweet during my favorite shows. I love interacting. Twitter forces you to be witty because you have only so much space. I love interacting and hearing from people. It is definitely the best and fastest way to reach me because I always check twitter.

Has being on Home Shopping Network brought more views and subscribers to your YouTube channel?

I think so. My primary viewership in US is in CA and NY. HSN has a different demographic. It’s people who are new to my channel and have never seen me before. I hope that is reciprocated and that I turned my viewers onto them. It needs to be a mutually beneficial relationship for it to work.

People talk about being able to live your dream and waking up everyday and doing what you love like its some distant thing and its possible. We have a very entrepreneurial spirit in the times that we live in and anyone can do anything.

What piece of advice would you give to someone just starting out on YouTube?

Have fun and be yourself. Offer a different perspective. Being yourself means being true to yourself. For example if you only like high-end makeup or shoes or clothes, don’t feel that because people love drugstore makeup videos, you have to do them. That will come across and people will know that you are not being authentic. Think about your group of friends and what your friends love about you. Are you funny, are you sweet, are you wild, whatever it is. Let that come across in your videos. People fall in love with their favorite vloggers because of their personalities, it’s so not about the products anymore. If you live your life to please people you will be pretty miserable.

Are you just starting out and need some guidance on some great equipment? Below is a roundup of some of the favorite tools mentioned on the show.

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS

Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.

Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!

Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!

THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT

After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!

  • 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
  • Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
  • Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
  • Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
  • Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
  • Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
  • Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
