Nicole from Young Wild and Polished Show Notes!!
I am just a makeup addict. It started with nail polish and it somehow progressed into makeup. When I started my channel it was strictly going to be nail polish and nail art. I started my channel because I was at home after my husband had gotten sick. I was home with him and I was bored. After being a mom for so long I needed human adult interaction. I did it just for fun. I’ll be lucky if I get 40 subscribers. That was my goal at first. Just give me 40 and I’ll be happy. Now it’s like my life. I’m filming, i’m going to events. I love it, I couldn’t be happier.
I started watching Lauren Curtis, she was the first girl that I watched. That was so cool that she gets to do this. I had no idea about YouTube. I stumbled upon it and I started watching Lauren and some of the other girls. I was thinking, I could do this! I already had 2k bottles of nail polish. I am so embarassed saying I own 4200 bottles of nail polish. Every time I watch her channel, when she would hold something up, she would hold it and click it shut with one hand. For some reason that was the cutest thing for me. I want to hold up products with one hand and click them shut! Every time I watch her I think of that. She is the reason that I started. She is the first person I watched and I still adore her.
How did your nail polish collection get started?
I don’t even know how it started. My friend and I started buying nail polish. I would go to the store for milk and come home with 10 bottles of nail polish. Now it is from different companies and different indie brands wanting me to share it on my channel and on my instagram. So basically just going to the store, having a shopping addiction and coming home with 15 bottles.
I’ll have a lot of indie brands contact me and say, will you try my polish and share it on my instagram which I am glad to do. It gives me the chance to try different brands than I wouldn’t otherwise try. It’s a way for me to find diamonds in the rough. I am honored that people want to send me stuff just to try out because of my social media. It’s flattering, it’s nice.
When did you start receiving attention from brands?
I would say that with nail polish, probably when I was about 10-15k on instagram followers and now with the bigger companies it actually just started within the past 4-5 months where I don’t have to email them to say, hey I’m so and so and I do this and it’s now them contacting me, which is nice.

What do you wish you knew when you first started your channel?
Lighting and Eyebrows
In my earlier videos I had the drawn on pencil thin totally uneven eyebrows. Lighting, I had no lighting. I started filming on my iphone in a corner of this room with no lights. I was like, who needs lights, there’s ambience. I got these umbrella lights from Amazon for $30 and it was the best investment I ever made. But the eyebrows, good God, they were bad.
Be Yourself. Be how you would be with your best friend. If you are goofy, if you are not goofy. Don’t try to be someone else. You don’t want to be the next anybody, you want to be the next you. Young girls are so impressionable and they see all this pretty on YouTube. There are so many people in this world and you are going to get people who do like you, and those are the people who matter.
Have thick skin. As nice as YouTube seems on the outside, it’s not so pretty. I know the bigger I get the more hate comes in. It’s hard to deal with. I’m very confident and ok in my skin. If you’re not, it can tear you apart. I get comments sometimes and I’ll ask my husband, is this true? I still need the reassurance as confident and comfortable in my skin that I am. People are just mean.
What is your parting piece of advice?
Parting Advice: Have fun with it. For you girls that are thinking of making a channel, do it and be yourself. Don’t try and be the next Michelle Phan, be the first YOU.
