Jen is an elementary school teacher, a wife, and a mother of 2. She started YouTube nearly 10 years ago.
On her original vlog channel, called Jenluv37, she did video competitions, cooking videos, and a pregnancy diary for her daughter, Lila. After giving birth to her son, John, YouTube was put on hold for 2 years.
In 2012, Jen wanted come back to YouTube, but also wanted to give her new channel a strong focus. Jen Luvs Reviews was born with the intention of giving honest reviews that people could trust. She has done just that and more, creating a beauty community of makeup lovers who not only learn from Jen, but learn from each other in what she calls the “collective brain of makeup awesomeness.”
In early 2015, What’s Up In Makeup was born from that desire, and is growing though its Facebook community page, photo based iOs and android app, as well as whatsupinmakeup.com. Through her weekly makeup news show of the same name, Jen and her team of reporters present the most exciting news in the makeup industry as well as new releases at Sephora, Ulta, drug stores, and indie brands.

What inspired you to start a channel?
I’ve always wanted to broadcast something for as long as I could remember. When I was little my mom got me a short wave radio with a cord attached to it. It would only do radio signals for ten feet. I made up entire radio shows hoping someone would hear me. YouTube is something I’ve been looking forward to my entire life. In 2006 nobody knew what they were doing, it was brand new so I uploaded all kinds of things. I took a break and then started JenLuv reviews.

What are your holy grail items?
Jessie’s Girl Liquid Eye Liner: You can get it at Rite Aid. It’s the best liquid eyeliner ever.
TooFaced Chocolate Bar Palette: Its so amazing. I was late to the game on it. I just got it.
OFRA Liquid Lipstick in Angeles. I use it to lighten shades or use it as an ombre. It is essential to me.
What are three holy grail work items?
PicMonkey for my thumbnails. I don’t do photoshop, its too complicated. I photoshop out my wrinkles.
My camera, I have a Canon70d I got for Christmas this year.
My iphone is essential. It is where I periscope and manage my app.
Who is your beauty vlogger inspiration?
EmilyNoel83
I love her because she’s incredibly transparent. You can tell she is being honest. If something is not good, shell tell you. When someone can call out a big brand when its not good, I think that’s cool. Shes not afraid to say it like it is.
What would you not do again?
I would not worry so much about my background and the things I couldn’t control In the end, when people subscribe to you, they wont watch you if you are boring. They wont click on your videos again if you don’t have good content. Your background and quality is your hook but you wont keep them if you don’t have good content.
What is your favorite social media platform? Periscope.
What are you glad you did when you first started your channel?
Staying true to myself and not compromising my integrity in order to get views or partners with a brand. Never signing a contract for a positive review. I think that was really important. I feel like I wouldn’t have built the community without the trust. It was key in me feeling good about being a beauty vlogger on youtube.
What is your favorite opportunity you got as a result of youtube?
My community is amazing. The opportunities I had, I got myself through blood, sweat and tears.
What is the one thing you struggled with on youtube?
Mostly its not worrying so much about the numbers game and just being thankful for what I have and doing what I love to do and not worrying about everything that is outside my control. I feel like that was a struggle for me is not getting hung up on the numbers. It was disheartening to see those numbers dropping. I had to put it aside and not look. I just had to be me. The people that will like my content will like me and they will stay. Because there were so many positive and positivity I have to resonate on that and try to let any negative go.
