Clancy Burke is a 20 year old YouTuber from Long Island, New York. She achieved success because of a recent viral video she created, “Working at Victoria’s Secret, My Experience”. She focuses on lifestyle videos about topics pertaining to her life such as college, body image, holidays and daily routines. She started her channel in 2009 and currently has 150k subscribers and 11 million video views.

My Thoughts on “How to Go Viral on YouTube” with Clancy Burke

I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with Clancy. We initially connected because she left me a comment on one of my YouTube videos. I checked out her channel and loved what I saw. She has great energy and her thumbnails and look of her channel are very consistent which is SO important for branding and recognition. She also creates unique videos about her everyday life such as “The Ugly Truth About Society” “How to Stay Skinny During the Holidays” “30 Signs You are a Common White Girl” and “Hating College and Selling Out”. After checking out her channel, I knew I wanted her on the show!

During our interview, she was open about her experiences. Based on what I saw and what we discussed, her success was a result of two things, a viral video and her personality. Would her viral video about Victoria’s Secret have been such a hit without her? Probably not. She has an engaging and interesting personality. It is interesting to note that it was a pretty basic video, just her talking to the screen. Why did it get viral? I think it’s a topic people might be curious about and something that isn’t really talked about on YouTube. There is nothing taboo about talking about it, it just happens to be an experience only a few people can speak about. There isn’t a lot of competition in the niche of “what its like to work at Victoria’s secret.” So, how does that translate to YOU? Think about your daily life and what you do that might be different and unique. Clancy said it perfectly and succinctly, “In YouTube, I think being successful is taking your experiences and what you have that is unique that nobody else has and putting it out there.”

Key Takeaways from the Interview with Clancy:

In starting a YouTube channel, use the best equipment. In this era of YouTube personalities and influencers, you are competing with the best of the best.

“Don’t start off with bad quality, in this day and age you are competing with the best of the best.”

In the episode we discuss the types of equipment you need and what you can save money on.

How to make a viral video. Clancy talked about her accidental viral video and how creating a “filler” video actually resulted in a huge turning point for her. “In YouTube, I think being successful is taking your experiences and what you have that is unique that nobody else has and putting it out there.

In the episode she details exactly what happened with that viral video and what happened to her channel as a result.

Being yourself is what will ultimately determine your success. Clancy describes herself often throughout the interview as “weird”. She realized once she embraced that, people resonated with it. In the episode she shares how she figured out how to be herself. “Be yourself from the getgo because people will see if you’re not.”
