I love talking to my successful bootcampers! I get to do two amazingly fun things: showcase these incredible women who I love so much, and also give you direct access to what made the biggest differences for them and grew their channels. Beauty YouTuber Michele Wang is here to share her journey from knitwear, to leaving her full-time job to pursue YouTube and her secrets for making videos built for engagement and growth!
Michele came to the bootcamp in August 2018. She was getting burned out at her full-time job and saw the potential with YouTube as that income was going up. So she decided to join to capitalize on YouTube more and pursue going full-time. Before that, she was doing different things dabbling on YouTube. She would make knitwear videos but the process was slow and not sustainable so in February 2017, after moving to Las Vegas, she decided to switch her niche to beauty and makeup. Though she switched to makeup, she wasn’t putting much intention into niching or picking video topics, but a video recommendation she saw inspired her to join the bootcamp, and the rest is history.
“Treat YouTube like a business. Credit card debt is the worst way to fund your business!”
She had about 16k subscribers before joining the bootcamp. Now she has over 90k subscribers and is a full-time YouTuber, making money with AdSense and affiliates. The bootcamp gave her new tools and the confidence that the niche she picked was the right choice. In this episode we’ll talk about how she made the transition from her job to full-time on YouTube, her insane and consistent way of making videos, and her biggest takeaways from the bootcamp. Enjoy!
“Negativity doesn’t really bother me. I have pretty thick skin at this point, I don’t care.”
4 Key Interview Takeaways
- Get your lighting right. With bad lighting, you’ll have a poor quality video. Especially when doing beauty and makeup when seeing details is at the core of what you’re doing, you can cheap out on good lighting. Michele gave her recommendations on this episode so head to the links and upgrade yours.
- The thumbnail is so important. One of the biggest takeaways Michele got from my bootcamp was how to make the YouTube thumbnails work. And she saw a drastic improvement in her engagement when she got that down. Don’t underestimate the thought that goes into thumbnails and the power that brought to a video you see going viral. It’s huge.
- It can’t hurt to ask for what you want. If you’re doing makeup and you need free product to review, email and ask the companies directly. You never know what can happen. Not just about makeup, but for everything, you never know what’s possible or where the yes is waiting, so don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself, lean into the possibility and ask.
- Niche down your audience. Michele was around 16k subscribers before she joined the bootcamp, but when she put more emphasis on niching everything became easier. Because she knew who she was talking to, she was able to make more content and be more consistent, which helped her grow. She was also able to build a relationship with a specific group of people, which also made her grow. The benefits and possibilities are endless. Niching down can also make you more attractive to brands.

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS
Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.
Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!
Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!
THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT
After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!
- 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
- Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
- Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
- Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
- Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
- Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
- Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
