There’s something magical that happens when you’re connected to your purpose and you’re sharing it authentically with the world. Beauty YouTuber & ipsy Creator, Lynette Cenée, is proof of that – and her channel is exploding. On this episode, we get to know more about Lynette and how she went from a coincidental YouTuber to a beauty powerhouse!
Lynette Cenée got her start on YouTube purely through serendipity. She was a makeup artist in Los Angeles, working with celebrities, on music videos, TV & film, you name it. But she wasn’t happy with her growth and she was looking to change jobs. In January 2013, she decided to respond to an online and in no time she was cast for her own YouTube channel.
“Every single number that rolls through, is a person.”
After years of several company acquisitions and ownership legal battles later, Lynette was able to get full ownership of her channel. In May 2016, she became one of only 10 in-house creators at ipsy Studios. From a young age, Lynette’s parents, who were stage magicians, instilled in her a strong belief in magic. She has taken that belief and infused it into the creativity and edginess she brings to her channel, which has now reached over 450 thousand subscribers and has over 3.3 million total views.
“Influence is a gift, and we should all approach it that way.”
8 Key Interview Takeaways
- Treat people with respect. This includes people you may be on opposite sides of a disagreement with. Everything comes full circle and the bridge you burn today might not be there for an opportunity tomorrow. Maintain your integrity, be as above board and respectful as you can. The way you treat someone is one of the little things that people remember.
- There’s an increasing demand for influencers. Pat yourselves on the back ladies, the future is ours. If you’re out there building your YouTube channel and increasing your influence, more brands are going to come calling. That’s because the landscape is shifting and, more and more, brands are recognizing that sharing the behind the scenes of your life is what is in demand – even more than A-list celebrities.
- Live is on the rise. What comes to mind when you think about doing live videos? If you get a bit nervous, I totally understand! But maybe it’s time to dust it off and try again. The consumption rate of live videos is increasing exponentially. People are craving that kind of content so get your practice now, make your mistakes and get great at it, because sooner than later, it will start taking over.
- Get a vision board party going. Lynette attributes a lot of her success and growth on YouTube to the opportunities she manifested though vision boarding. It’s a really powerful tool for getting that laser focus on your goals and dreams and activating your brain to see the opportunities associated with them. Get a couple friends together and go to town on a vision board party. You may be surprised with the results.
- You’re here right now for a reason. Think about it: for every person who decides to start a YouTube channel, there are probably a thousand or 10s of thousands of people who go the opposite way. Not to mention, for every consistent YouTuber, there are thousands who’ve already quit. Your drive to grow and improve at YouTube is rarer than you think and it’s not entirely random either. Really dive into that. If you’re doing what you’re doing on YouTube for a big purpose, what is the impact you’re having? What is the transformation you want to create for your audience?
- Surround yourself with the right people. Your team and who you surround yourself with is SUPER important. You don’t want to get dragged down by negativity, competition and people who’d rather take than give. Find the people who want to celebrate each other, build each other up and believe in abundance. Then hold on to those people, grow with them and cherish them.
- Don’t get caught in the numbers trap. It’s easy to get focused on your quest for more – more subscribers, more views, and more revenue – and lose sight of who you’re creating content for. But to reframe your mind, understand that every number is a person. You might be thinking your video got “only” 1,000 views and someone else’s got 20,000, but a thousand people took the time to watch your content. That is HUGE. Refocus on that, and remember why you joined this industry.
- Be true to yourself when working with brands. Don’t compromise on your ideals and your authenticity to work with a brand, for love or money. You’ll end up regretting it and your content might suffer as a result.
